Question about 1996 Chevrolet Blazer

I drove 96 blazer 4.3 vortex. then it sat next day and went to start next night and it just cranks then it will spit and sputter a lil then it just stops any ideas on what this would be

Hi Anthony,

Assuming the machine has had no priors. Water in the gas. Has this signature. A good treatment and a fresh do over with a cleaner may get you going. Keep full in Winter.

Problem persists:

If the fuel filter has not been changed in several thousands of miles. And lines to and from the fuel pump in the gas tank, look for leaks.
Check all your vacuum lines for cracks and connections around the egr valve and the carburetor.
Check the choke throttle body linkage. Is something broken?

Fuel pump relay sound bad. Under the hood in the fuse box is the location of the relay. Look under the cover for the diagram to locate it faster. Hope this helps. Please keep me posted. Good luck

Well the only thing i can think of is when your fuel is below half a tank the pressure relief valve and a rubber hose between the pump and the fuel line is exposed. Its possible your fuel is leaking back into the gas tank as it sits overnight, ect. You may want to perform a fuel pressure check when the the gas is at 1/4 tank and been sitting for awhile, pressure should hit 55 seconds after key is turned to run position.

Hello carol...from the symptons you describe more than likely it's the CPS (crankshaft position sensor.)
The CPS is a common problem on Cateras with these symptoms.
The sensor is a magnetic impulse type that sends a signal to the computer, the computer then triggers the fire signal. When the CPS gets weak, dirty or has low voltage the intermitten no starts occur. It will finally result in a no start at all...Please be aware that a lot of caddy dealers will and have overcharged customers for this common problem by ill advise and replaceing uneeded componets.

sounds like your head gasket is leaking and need replacing try turning the engine over with out the plugs in and see if any water comes of the plug holes or do a compression test on each bore to see if they a lower than the over bores hope it help you and you need a torque wrench if you going to do your self and now how to set up the timing marks on the crank and the cam .find them in car book

96 ford bronco cranks over but no start.sat a few days and started.then didn't start next day.layer that night started and ran great.parked and went into store .came out and truck no start

Distributer module sounds like the problem. Ford had a unique way of letting you know the module was about to quit, the car would start intermittently for a few days. After that it would completely fail and never start again. Other makers cars just croke right then and there. New distributer module is a very easy repair it can be done in just a few minutes, and they aren't that expensive.

CKP sensor or cam sensor. one goes bad and causes other to go bad. easy fix and not too expensive.

Could be a mass air flow sensor or a MAP sensor problem , but without testing that is just a guess . Take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop that has the proper diagnostic tools an knows how to use them . Using a scan tool to view engine sensor data parameters .Fuel trim's ,short an long term , are the O2 sensor's switching normally, coolant temp. A lot more involved then a fuel filter . engine management system.

have you replaced the oil sending unit. and check the wire to it, and also i would give the engine a oil pressure test while the sending unit is out, if you have good oil pressure then, i wouldn't worry about oil pump, i would still consider replacing the oil sending unit.

Hi. I have a 1998 s-10 Blazer that i am changing the motor and i was curious on what year 4.3 vortex will be compatible in a 98'. I was told the 4.3 vortex came out in 96'. What years will fit please help....

From 1996 up to 2000 I can safely say.
In 2001 the crank depth, and pilot bore was changed.
(Crank depth: How far the pilot bearing, or bushing, at the end of the crankshaft, is from the nose of the crankshaft)
In 2001 the bearing/bushing sat further back, from the nose tip of the crankshaft
This resulted in a deeper bellhousing. (And a different torque converter)

My advice would be to go to a decent salvage yard for vehicles, and ask them to look it up in their Interchange Manuals, so that you can be absolutely sure.

Won't start!

the spark from the starter is a loose wiring or short starter,but the main thing is you can crank it,check it, you have a spark at plugs if yes check if your pump is working
