Question about 2006 Chevrolet HHR

What could be wrong with my 2006 Chevrolet HHR?

A couple of days ago I attempted to start my 2006 HHR. I put the key in the ignition and turned it. It was like my battery had died. I attempted to take the key out of the ignition but it had locked up. I managed to get it started but now there is a whole host of problems as a result. The power steering is gone. The check engine light is on steady. The odometer, trip odometer, temperature/fuel range/average speed gauge and speedometer are not working. I just had her in the garage a few weeks ago and had the recalls done. The ignition switch was replaced. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Last night I drained the battery after leaving the headlights on. After multiple attempts to boost it and having left it charging for about an hour I decided to switch out batteries. And lo and behold everything is working as it should. Now I can cancel my appointment at the dealership that I had booked for Tuesday.

Thanks for your advice. I didn't heed it at first. However, last night I drained the battery by leaving the headlights on. After multiple attempts to boost it and having left it charging for about an hour I decided to switch out batteries. And lo and behold everything is working as it should.

The first place to start would be with the new ignition switch. What you are saying sounds like a defective switch.

Testimonial: "That's what I thought too. I called down to the dealership and they said that it would not be the new ignition switch. He said that they had replaced hundred's without an issues. I have since read on another forum that the power steering fuse goes when the HHR is jump started. It seems that he didn't properly jump start the vehicle. I will start there first. Husband to pick one up today."

Sounds like a programming or electonic problem If it was to replace an ignition switch, the dealership may have flashed the computer with the wrong information to operate you vehicle or match up with the replaced part.. You will most definitely have to take it back.

How do you perform a learn after installing the igniton relay on a 2007 hhr 2.2

30 MINUTE RELEARN PROCEDURE
  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON, vehicle will not start.
  3. Observe the SECURITY telltale. After approximately 10 minutes, the telltale will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
  5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
  6. Important: The vehicle learns the password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
  7. Start the engine. The vehicle has now relearned

To eliminate the battery have a load test done to check the cell conditions. I suspect that it may be an immobiliser problem from the key issue.

I have a 2006 chevrolet hhr, the steering column was replaced a year ago and is now out of warranty. My issue is when I go to turn the car off and try to remove my key it will not come out. It only turns...

This is a VERY common problem. The ultimate answer is to have the ignition switch replaced. In the meantime, you'll need to be able to get that key out. On the bottom side of the steering column there is a one inch square rubber plug that you pry out. You can then use your pointer finger to push the switch in. This will release the lock and let you turn your key to the off position and remove. You may wan to leave this plug out as you'll be doing this a lot until it is repaired.

You are going to need to recalibrate the remote to the vehicle. As long as the remote works correctly which i think it should. It will actually tell you how in the owners manual. I am not current with the HHR as i have not worked on one yet. They must be reliable!

Long crank, no start

I want to thank u for reporting ur problem. I recently had to change my fuel pump and it just happened to have happened on the same day u had to change urs. I really think that after having a car for less than 2 years this should not have happened but I am no mechanic just a driver. But just wanted u to know that u should also have them do a fuel cleaning and flush out the injectors and a throttle body service. Good luck hope I have helped u out.
