What is the correct timing chain installation on 2000 grand cherokee 4.0 engine

the timing marks are to line up and face each other
then fin the chain
then turn the crank until the crank sprocket is facing down timing mark is facing down
the cam mark should be in the 2 oclock position
there should be 15 links between marks
form your description that is what you have done so the problem is not in the timing chain installation
back firing is normally from a valve still open when the spark occurs so check firing order or the distributor installation is not 180 degrees out

Got a 2003 ford tauras ..would the crank sensor keep the transmisson from engaging

no the crank sensor has nothing to do with your transmission. and all the crank sensor does is control spark up to around 4 or 5 hundred rpms (while your trying to start the car) after your car starts the crank sensor does nothing. the ecm takes over ignition controls once the engine is running. if you took it to a parts store to get it scanned beware the typical know it alls at the parts stores, most of them will do no more than get you to throw parts at your car rather than actually diagnose it. leave diagnosing to a professional mechanic. parts store guys are not trained mechanics. on the transmission issue what do you mean it will not engage? does it go into gear but not drive? is the gearshift stuck? does it go into gear but then stall the motor?

My 97 firebird died on a stop light. A guy told me that its the crank sensor gone bad. I need to see a pic or diagram of its location to replace it.

it's usually on the front of the engine by crank pulley, cylindrical with one wire coming off it. Points at the crank damper. Some are other places but I'm not sure on this one. Try Googling crank sensor, 97 firebird.

I was told my crank sensor is bad . Where is it located on the car? It was not cranking right, It was like it is flooding.

Nissan recalls that problem to reprogram the ECU. What happens the crank sensor electrical terminals seep oil into the crank sensors plug. The new metal crank sensors correct this problem.

Look on the fire wall side of engine between the rear engine mount and the transmission bell housing, there is only about 2 inches space for you to work with. You may have to remove the rear engine mount if your hands are bigger than mine and you have to remove this sensor from the top side of the engine.

Crank sensor location

Look around the bottom of cylinder block. Or near where the flywheel is to, because the crank angle sensor works from missing teeth or magnets on the flywheel or a cog/wheel fixed to the crankshaft.Hope this helps
