Question about 2001 Ford Focus

1 Answer

2001 focus zx3 won't idle, runs to rich, the plugs are black, but it needs starting fluid to get started.

Planning on new plugs, and fuel pressure sensor, or the engine temp sensor. Seems to be some confusion about how many temp sensors there are, and a possible fuel pressure/ temp sensor.

Not getting any trouble codes as a rule, but did get an oxygen sensor rich condition once while varying the throttle to keep the car running. Also run the car until the temp was up to normal operating temp. Checked one plug after it died and it was carbon fouled.

No trouble codes. Can only keep the car running above 2000 rpm.

STARTING PROBLEM, WONT IDLE,BLACK SMOKE, ONCE STARTED IT SOUNDS ROGUTH

This problem is a bit more difficult to diagnose because half of your symptoms rule out half of the solutions. I would think the ISC control could be dirty or not working or your fuel injectors are sticking open.

With black exhaust smoke you are running rich. Often the "Cold start sequence" is at fault for poor starts making the engine too lean when the sequence fails. An intake air leak can cause the engine to run Rich, causing the black smoke, rough idle, rough running conditions. This is still a possibility, but the on-board computer usually sets a Code saying you are running "Lean" and then enriches the fuel ratio and floods the engine by itself.

Now the fuel injectors can cause several of your problems. For start-up problems, the remaining fuel pressure can dump fuel into the engine as the car sits because the injectors are sticking open. Someone would need to perform a fuel pressure bleed-down test to see if you have this problem.

Another way to verify this problem is to capture the oil during an oil change and smell it for gasoline fumes. The dilution of the oil will destroy the engine. If the injectors are found to be the problem, a new oil filter and change are needed.

Why is my 89 ford bronco running so rich

I saw what you replaced, didn't see any testing? Any applicable trouble codes?
Did you use a gage and check proper fuel pressure? My info on that engine size, said 35--45 psi. If the fuel pressure is too high, check the return line. As far as the fuel pressure regulator, do you have vacuum?

You may not have all the things I list. these are things that will make an engine run rich. ECM, 02 sensors, map sensor, mass air flow sensor, vacuum leaks, throttle position sensor, Clogged air filter, Clogged catalitic converter. You have already replaced the injectors and the ECT , so that rules them out. Check for codes. Start with vacuum leaks. Hoses and the intake manifold gaskets. If you need more info let me know. Car ships replaced wires plugs o2 sencer sometimes acts like it is flooding run fine on open road.

If it acts like it is flooding while idling, but it runs fine on the road, it could be running too rich and flooding it out due to leaking injectors, bad fuel pressure regulator, or excessive fuel pressure.

I would start by replacing the Fuel Pressure Regulator since it doesn't cost as much as the injectors.
Check your fuel pressure using a Fuel Pressure Check Gauge to see if the fuel pressure regulator is maintaining the proper pressure.

Vacuum is attached to the Fuel Pressure Regulator to control system pressure. When the fuel pressure regulator is not functioning properly it causes the fuel pressure to be above normal operating pressure. This condition causes excess fuel to be injected causing a rich mixture that produces black smoke.

2001 ford focus had the spark plugs and wire change. Has a code po171.. ran good for two days. The spark plugs are blacker than acs of spades which is running rich. Don't know what to do next. To me its...

PO171-System to Lean (Bank 1)

Air filter cover tight?
All intake ducting tight?
Clean MAF Sensor.--CRC MAF Cleaner
Fuel Pressure Regulator?
EVAP Purge Valve-stuck open?
Vacuum leaks?
EGR System-issues?

Seems your getting a lean O2 Code, because it is trying to correct for a rich condition,as you said.

Is the Throttle Position Sensor-original?

Work on what is driving it rich,my list is a possible.

the ......fuel pressure regulator is on the fuel rail near the rear of the intake manifold it is round in shap. i would first check to see if you have a problem with your O2 sensors. also i would have the TPS sensor checked. the TPS is what controls your idle. it is located on the throttle body is black in color and has a weatherproof plug to it. please rate this.........thanks
