Where is the 4x4 relay located?

My dad's 4x4 isn't working properly. Apparently its the 4x4 motor relay thats messed up because a mechanic connected the 4x4 directly and it works fine. He has relays at home but they can't manage to find where the 4x4 relay is located. Can you please help?

Check the wiper arms are properly connected to the mechanism,that protrudes from the actual motor...these normaly have a tooth like system and therefor if the wiper arms are not connected properly then the wiper motor will run but the wipers wont move.....also check the wiper cross arm mechanism(located under the bonnet)as these are normaly on a push fit ball and could be worn and disengaged.

Transmission was replaced and now have no shift..neutralized

Understanding how a machine works--whether a car, toaster or computer--is crucial to obtaining a clear understanding of what the trouble spots might be and knowing how to identify them. The Internet is the fastest, most up to date, and cheapest way to get a quick refresher course (or even learn for the first time) how your car works. Before you begin searching for the cause of your Ford Ranger troubles, make sure you look at this or a similar site first to brush up on your car knowledge.
Next, recruit a friend, spouse or other helping hand and head out to the car to begin diagnosing the problem. Determine if the 4X4 system can be shifted to 4X4 high by pressing the 4X4 button. The dash and 4X4 buttons should light up. If they do not, one of the following is faulty: the dash button, the 4X4 module or the shift motor.

To determine which of these three is malfunctioning, have your friend sit near the module. Press the 4X4 button and ask your friend to listen for the sound of the relays in the 4X4 module. If the relays can be heard, the problem with the 4X4 lies in the 4X4 module computer or the shift motor. The most common problem in this case is a broken stop bumper in the shift motor. If your friend is unable to hear the relays within the 4X4 module, you will need to make sure the 4X4 module is functioning properly.

To check the 4X4 module, unplug the two connectors that are plugged into the left side of the module. Turn the car on and push the reset/test button located on the module. After pushing the button, the LED light located on the module should flash rapidly four or five times. If the LED lights do not flash or flash without stopping, the module is damaged. If the LED lights flashed, then stopped after four or five times, the module is functioning properly and you will need to check other parts such as the shift motor, magnetic clutch, wiring harness and 4X4 switch to determine the cause of the problem.

If your 4X4 is making a grating or clicking noise from beneath the front wheels, the hubs need to be checked to make sure they are locking properly. To test this on a car with automatic hubs, rotate the front axle shafts under the truck. If, after a few turns, the axle locks up and can no longer be turned, the automatic hub is working properly. If, however, the axle does not lock up and you are able to continue rotating it, the hub is either bad or in need of a good cleaning.

To test a car with manual hubs, make sure the 4X4 is off and rotate the axle until it locks up. Again, if the axle does not lock up, the hub is not working or in need of a cleaning.
To determine if the automatic hub is no longer working, take the car out of 4X4 mode and rotate the axle shaft. If the axle does not lock up after a number of revolutions, the hub is most likely not working at all. Repeat this with the other axle shaft. On a car with manual hubs, disengage 4X4, lock in the hubs, and attempt to rotate the axle shafts. If they can be rotated at all, the hub is not working. Repeat this with the other axle shaft.

Heater blower motor not working and a/c not working as well, checked fuses blower motor has no power going to it, fuses checked good already changed thermister

The problem could be a relay that could be bad .It is possible that it is located in the fuse box in the engine compartment.It should indicate on the cover what the relays operate.These relays can be tested to see if working properly,but I would recomend that you allow a mechanic to test them since all relays are set up differently.Also if you have the manual for the car it should show in the fuse replacement where the fuses and relays are located.

4wd does not work

Electronic Shift On the Fly (ESOF) Operation
The ESOF system is an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4WD HIGH mode at speed. To engage or disengage LOW Range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 kph, the brake depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.

The transfer case is equipped with an electromagnetic clutch which is located inside the case. This clutch is used to spin up the front drive-line when shifting from 2WD to 4x4 High mode at speed. When the control switch on the instrument panel is turned, the generic electronic module (GEM) recognizes that a shift has been requested and activates the electromagnetic clutch and the relays which power the transfer case shift motor. When the shift motor reaches the desired position as determined by the contact plate position inputs to the GEM, power to the shift relays and motors will be removed. When the transfer case front and rear output shafts are synchronized, the spring loaded lockup collar mechanically engages the main-shaft hub to the drive sprocket. Finally, the front axle collar is engaged and the electromagnetic clutch is deactivated.

Shift Between 2WD and 4x4 HIGH:
Shifts between 2WD and 4x4 HIGH can be made at speed. Listed below are the inputs and outputs needed by the GEM to execute a change between any of these modes.

Feature Inputs:
*4WD Mode Switch (Various resistances).
*Contact Plate Position Inputs A, B, C, D (grounded when closed, open circuit when open).

Feature Outputs:
*4x4 Shift Motor Relay Outputs
*Transfer Case Clutch Relay (grounded when relay is on, open circuit when relay is off).
*4x2/4x4 Vacuum Solenoid (grounded when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
*Cluster Indicators (ground when activated, open circuit when deactivated).

Shifting Into/Out of 4WD LOW:
When shifting into or out of 4WD LOW, the GEM requires that the vehicle speed be less than 5 kph, the brake is applied, and the transmission is in NEUTRAL.

Feature Inputs:
*4WD Mode Switch (Various resistances).
*Contact Plate Position Inputs A, B, C, D (grounded when closed, open circuit when open).
*VSS Sensor (Sinusoid Signal: 0.7V-20V, 2.2 Hz/mph).
Brake Input (battery voltage when brake is depress, open circuit when not activated).
*Transmission Range Sensor (grounded when transmission is in NEUTRAL, open circuit otherwise).

Feature Outputs:
*4x4 Shift Motor Relay Outputs
*4x2/4x4 Vacuum Solenoid (grounded when activated, open circuit when deactivated).
*Cluster Indicators (grounded when activated, open circuit when deactivated).

4WD Mode Switch
A rotary switch allows the vehicle operator to choose between 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW modes of 4x4 operation.

GEM Module
The Generic Electronic Module (GEM) controls the operation of the 4x4 system

Vehicle Speed Sensor
The vehicle speed sensor (VSS), mounted in the rear of the transfer case, informs the GEM of the vehicle speed.

Transfer Case Shift Motor Sense Plates

The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electric shift motor, informs the GEM to the positions of the transfer case

Transmission Range Sensor
Located on the left side of the transmission, this sensor informs the GEM when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.

Electric Shift Motor
The electric shift motor, mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case, drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case to select between the 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW positions.

4x4/4x2 Vacuum Solenoids
These two solenoids are attached to the upper RH side of the engine compartment dash, and alternately route vacuum to the vacuum motor which engages/disengages the center axle disconnect collar in the front axle assembly.

4x4 Shift Motor Relay
A module containing two relays which under the control of the GEM, shift the transfer case shift motor between the 2WD, 4WD HIGH, and 4WD LOW modes.

Transfer Case Clutch Relay
An electromechanical relay is used to activate the transfer case clutch within the transfer case.

Good luck and hope this helps,but start with the simple and check the fuses and wire harness. Both white/light blue stripe wires should have 12V in run. The GEM will ground the left side (closest to engine) solenoid to disengage the front axle. It will ground the the right side solenoid (closest to fender) to engage the front axle. If the GEM doesn't see Neutral it will not let the truck come out of 4Lo. If the GEM had water leaking on it it may well be the root of the problem. The shift motor only has power when the GEM sends it a signal to move the shift lever. Once the shift is completed the motor shuts off. There are 2 wires that control the shift motor. A yellow and an orange. The GEM alternates between 12v and Ground to these wires to control which way the motor turns. The GEM uses the transfer case shift relay module to control the power to the motor. There are contact plates inside the shift motor assembly that indicate the position that the shift lever is in. This is what the GEM used to know what the T-case is doing. Any one of these components can fail.

I have an 86 toyota 4x4 with the 22r motor. my

it could just be the switch,, or more likley to be the resistor burned out or the reostat? (same thing realy)

1992 ford f-150 4 wheel drive will not work

First, are the lights on the dash ,(I am speculating its electric 4x4) and do the buttons light up?
Have you placed the transmission in neutral before trying 4x4? If you have tried all of that, check power going to the electric motor on the back of the transfer.
If you have power there, then test the motor. There is a 3/8" square hole in the back where you can manualy put it in 4x4 for emergency use.

Before I pulled anything off I would start checking fuses. More than likely the fuse you'll be looking for will be under the hood. But I'd go ahead and check all of the fuses just to be sure. ( A blown fuse will either be smokey looking, or you'll be able to see a broken piece of wire in the middle of it). If that is not the problem then more than likely a relay or the control computer for the 4x4 is messed up. Generally, if there is a mechanical problem with the transfer case, or the servo motor that changes it's gears, the 4x4 indicator lights will flash. Since they are not flashing I believe your problem is in the electrical system. If it is not a fuse, I recommend having a mechanic look at it. Merry Christmas!
