Question about 2000 Lincoln Town Car

1 Answer

My car starts, but won't idle. If I press on the gas, it is smooth, but as soon as I let off the gas, it dies

I cleaned the Mass Air Flow sensor and changed the air filter, but it made no difference

Try changing the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). This has a lot of influence on the idle. Other than that, look for a broken or split vacuum hose.

What could cause jerking and stalling at the same place on my route every week or so on my 92 buick century 3.3

How long since a tune up? Definitely add some fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank...maybe 2 bottles...I prefer Luca Oil injector cleaner...Walmart sells this the cheapest...also sludge in tank? Add a bottle of HEET to the gas tank to help dry up moisture,,,water...Change air filter and clean out (spray) throttle body...near the air filter inlet...also spray out mass air flow sensor...be sure to use MASS Air flow sensor spray only...does not damage the sensor...better mileage, smooth idle...hope this helps.

You should have the mass air flow meter checked also have the throttle body checked the idle air control valve is there.

Truck will start as long as give it gas will die as soon as you try to let it idle

This is a symptom of a bad mass air flow sensor. This is the sensor in line between the air filter and throttle body. Unplug it and see if it idles. If it does replace it.

Pushing on the gas is causing my car to die

sounds like a mass air sensor problem. When you give it gas does it bog down? A mass air flow wil do that.

Car sputters or dies when idling, but starts fine.

I suspect you have an idle circuit issue. When the thottle is closed, the throttle valve is almost closed (like 95%). The linkage on the throttle body is against the hard stop.
SO, when idling you need a way to let enough air into the engine to maintain an idle speed. The IAC, Idle Air Control valve is the way you do that and the engine computer controls the rate of air flow.
Sometimes it gets plugged up so you can clean it with a little carb cleaner. Might have to take it apart.
Also, you have a MAF, Mass Air Flow sensor that tells the computer how much air is flowing through the air cleaner intake at any time. The sensor gets coated with varnish and vies a false reading. Clean it gently with carb cleaner and a toothbrush.
Other than that, I would go to an auto parts store that can run a computer scan for free to see if you have any fault codes stored. They will tell you next stpes.

I assume you 2.0L SPI engine & not Zetec.
