Which is the supply and which is the return on the motor to connect fuel lines on a 454 big block vortec?

Had motor rebuilt and now I am re installing everything, I have forgotten which is the supply and which is the return on the motor to connect the fuel lines....

yeah this will work....most 350 big blocks come with either a 350, 350 turbo or 400 turbo transmissions.....bolt pattern is the same

Dia. of fuel line for a 454

where do you want the fuel line to go or from , there should be a fuel pump on the side of the block on the passenger side in the front there should be a steel line from there to the carburetor, , if you are referring the tank there should also be a long steel line from the tank to that pump which is standard size is either 5/16 or 3/8 I would never run a rubber hose that length , or no longer than a foot because of safety issues hope this helps

To install:

  1. Clean all gasket surfaces completely.
  2. Install the intake manifold gaskets with the port blocking plates facing the rear of the engine. Factory gaskets should have the words "This Side Up" visible.
  3. Apply gasket sealer to the front and rear sealing surfaces of the engine block.
  4. Apply a 0.197 inch (5mm) bead of RTV sealer to the front and rear of the block. Extend the sealer approximately 1 / 2 -inch (13mm) onto the heads.
  5. Install the lower intake manifold.
  6. Apply sealer to the lower intake manifold bolts prior to installation.
  7. Install the bolts and tighten in sequence and in 3 steps as follows:
    1. First step to 26 inch lbs. (3 Nm).
    2. Second step to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
    3. Final step to 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm).

  8. If removed, install the alternator bracket bolt.
  9. Install the coolant by-pass hose.
  10. Install the EGR valve.
  11. Connect the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing.
  12. Connect the heater hose to the lower intake manifold.
  13. Connect the fuel pressure and return lines to the lower intake manifold.
  14. Connect the wiring harnesses and brackets to the lower manifold.
  15. Install the throttle cable bracket, then attach the throttle cable and the cruise control cable (if equipped).
  16. Install the transmission oil level indicator and tube, if equipped.
  17. Install the EGR tube, clamp and bolt.
  18. Install the PCV valve and hose.
  19. Install the A/C compressor and bracket.
  20. Install the distributor.
  21. Install the upper intake manifold.
  22. Fill the cooling system.
  23. Connect the negative battery cable.
  24. Start the vehicle and check the ignition timing (not adjustable).
  25. Verify no oil, coolant, vacuum or fuel leaks.


  26. Install the intake manifold bolts and tighten them to 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) in the sequence shown.

Hi, the aluminum drive brackets from a vortec small block will not fit a big block, especially an older one, due to hole location, bracket shape and size.

REPLACEMENT of a fuel filter on a 1997

The fuel filter (1) is mounted next to the fuel pump module (2), on top of the fuel tank (3)

The fuel delivery system uses quick-connect fittings. The fuel filter mounts to the top of the fuel tank.
  1. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Place a drain pan underneath the fuel filter to catch any spilling fuel that will result from disconnecting the fuel lines.
It may be necessary to support the weight of the fuel tank with a block of wood and a floor jack. Once this is accomplished, loosen, but do not remove, the fuel tank strap bolts. Allow the fuel tank to lower just enough to access the fuel line fittings at the fuel pump module.


Disengage the fuel line quick-connect fittings from the fuel pump module

Be sure to place a drain pan underneath the filter line fittings to catch all fuel spillage

Locate the fuel filter in its mounting on top of the fuel tank. Detach the quick-connect fittings from the chassis fuel supply tube and fuel pump module by squeezing the quick-connect fitting retainer tabs together and pulling the fitting assembly away from the fuel line nipple. The retainer will remain on the fuel tube.

Using a 10mm socket, remove the fuel filter mounting bolt ...

... then remove the fuel filter from the top of the fuel tank

  1. Remove the fuel filter mounting bolt and remove the fuel filter from the fuel tank.
To install:
  1. Install the fuel filter on the top of the fuel tank and tighten the mounting bolt.
  2. The fuel supply tube (to chassis fuel line), return tube (to pump module) and fuel supply (to fuel filter) tube are permanently attached to the fuel filter. The quick-connect fitting ends of the fuel supply and return tubes are of different sizes.
  3. Apply a light coating of 30W engine oil to the nipples of the fuel filter.
  4. Push the quick-connect fitting over the fuel line until the retainer seats and clicks into place. Be sure the retainer tabs have locked into the case of the fitting.
  5. If necessary, raise the fuel tank and tighten the fuel tank strap bolts.
  6. Lower the vehicle. Start the engine and check for leaks.

My 1996 Gmc K2500 with a 7.4l is miss firing. runs good till it warms up, then the problem starts. I have no codes in the computer. new fuel filter, spark plugs, air filter

Very good chance that it's bad fuel injectors and/or fuel pressure regulator. Very common with the 96-2000 L29 motor (Vortec 7.4L)
Replace with better injectors, the OEM ones are NOT WORTH cleaning. Go to

Knock in engine

it can also be an injector. injectors tend to supply more diesel after long service. To check if this is the problem: let the motor idle whilst it knocks. start from the front of the motor- loosen no1 injector fuel line- the motor will start idling roughly as fuel supply to no1 piston is starved. If the knock persists, tighten the fuel line and move to no2 injector and repeat the process. the knock will gradually go away if one of the injectors' fuel lines are loosened and the injector is faulty. If you get 1 or more injectors with these symptoms, remove and replace the injector. If the problem persists, it can either be that one of the diesel pump plungers are worn and supplies too much fuel or a big end bearing is faulty.

No power steering new installation

disconnect the return line at pump put it in a jug start the engine check for cirrulation and too bleed air keep filling pump if you have no cirrulation the reconnect the return hose and discnect the supply too see if it pumping if it is then you have a blockageif not then you may have a bad pump
