How to reset anti-theft on a 2000 alero

The security, antitheft or lock picture/icon is a visual indication that something in the car's antitheft system is failing. In most GM cars and trucks there is a hidden system that most people are unaware even exists. From the moment you put your key in the ignition, there begins a constant line of communication between your key's security chip or transponder, to the ignition's lock cylinder, and then to the car's TDM (Theft Deterrent Module). These 3 parts are in CONSTANT communication. If the key is in the ignition, then these parts are sending signals to each other. The security light illuminates when that signal gets broken, even just for a second. When the signal breaks, the car misinterprets this as an attempt at theft and goes into antitheft mode. The car thinks its being stolen or hotwired because it is not getting that signal from YOUR specific key. This is why the security light turns on and shuts down your vehicle. This link explains it pretty well.

Told that pcm defective anti theft locked up wont start

Hello, what you were told is not impossible. However, the antitheft may affect the PCM and you have 1 problem looking like two. You need to accurately measure the Battery Voltage and it really doesn't cost you much to recharge the Battery. A fully charged Battery has between 13.2 and 13.4 Volts.

If the Battery Voltage drops by as little as 10% it can kick in the Antitheft. This means if the voltage hovers around 12, the antitheft engages. 12 Volts is still enough to spin the Starter, and everything else will work, but the Ignition will be cut off.

Try entering the Security code on the Keypad if you have a Keypad. Another thing you might try is to ask an Autoparts store about a PCM Relay. It would be in the Relay box. If you have an Owners Manual, look for the application. On some Ford products its 303, but later Models required soldering to remove and replace it. On earlier Models it may be a plug in.

When you do make a repair, the "Check Engine" light may stay on. Autozone or Oreillys will scan for free and can cancel the light. Sometimes disconnecting the Battery causes problems with the Antitheft, and you would be right back where you started again.

How to reset the anti theft swith and Where is it

Some possible solutions that might help: 1. I'm not sure if this model comes with a Master Ignition key (which is usually a different colour fob or shape). If it does, then try starting the car with the Master key, it should override and reset the antitheft system and allow the car to start. 2. The Alarm keyfob (if it has one) battery may need replacing. 3. There may be an override key operated switch on the alarm itself or secreted away somewhere inside the car, which you can use to activate/deactivate the antitheft device? 4. You may have to key a code number onto a set of buttons on the dashboard to reset the Antitheft device? 5. Do you have the User Manual for the vehicle. There should be some explanation in there about what precautions to take when replacing the vehicle battery, and how to reset the anti theft device so that the engine can be started again
