It is an electrical problem but could be one of a hundred things. The best bet is to take it to an Audi dealer where they know what all the VAG codes mean.

your crankshaft positon sensor is defective. Replace it and the epc will never come back and no more dying out. this happened to me several times and it would just come and go. i replaced it and now the car starts right away and the epc light hasnt returned since

I had the exact problem with my A4 2001 1,9 TDI but i just turned the car on, then first turned the steering wheel to the left as far as it goes, then to the right (i dont know if this is necessary but this is what i did). After i drove for few meters,the light went off and it worked normally.
