Randy Ohler Why do you think it is the turn signal switch? I had to replace the clock spring, steering column bracket, windshield washer switch and the multi function switch (headlight switch) August 9 2013 because the clock spring went bad. All brand new stuff! When the front turn signals are not working the back turn signals are working the indicator light in the dash is blinking fast! I have turned the ignition off then back on and then they start working but not every time, it has me stumped. Help!

Sounds like you have a bulb filament touching the second filament in the same bulb. Check them all to be sure.

Ignition switch removal/replacement for 1995 vw passat


Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering wheel, and then remove the steering column covers. Remove the turn signal and wiper switches. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring. Remove the clamping washer, spring and contact ring from the steering column, and then remove the lock housing up off the column tube and steering column. Remove the ignition switch mounting fastener and remove the switch. Installation is in reverse order of removal noting the following: Press the contact ring, spring and clamping washer onto the steering column using a properly sized and sturdy metal pipe or tube. If after installation of the clamping washer, the steering column is not projecting out far enough, pull the steering column out further.

How to replace ignition lock cylinder


This may or may not help,but i found this

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. Disable the SIR System.
2. Battery negative cable.
3. Knee bolster and IP steering column reinforcement. NOTICE: The steering column should never be supported by only the lower support bracket alone, damage to the column lower bearing adapter could result.
4. Lower support bracket from vehicle (2 bolts).
5. Upper column support from IP (2 bolts).
6. Lower steering column so that it rests on the driver seat.
7. Ignition switch wiring protector.
8. Ignition switch retaining screw and nut.
9. Ignition and turn signal switch column harness connectors from IP harness.
10. Turn signal switch connector from column harness.
11. Ignition switch, harness, and connector. Important

o DO NOT splice ignition switch wires.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Ignition switch, securing with retaining screws.

o Adjust ignition switch. Steering Column Unit Repair.

2. Turn signal switch connector to column harness.
3. Ignition and turn signal switch column harness connectors to IP harness.
4. Ignition switch wiring protector.
5. Raise steering column to support bracket.
6. Two bolts to upper support bracket. Do not tighten fully at this time.
7. Bolt and nut to lower support bracket.

o Align column to instrument panel opening. A small shim (wedge) placed between the instrument panel column support bracket and the column can be used to hold the column stationary while tightening the upper support bolts.
o Upper and lower column support bolts and nuts to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).

8. IP steering column reinforcement plate and knee bolster.
9. Battery negative cable.
10. Enable the SIR system.

I need to know how to replace my turn signal switch on my steering wheel my windshield washer turner broke off so either I need to know how to fix the windshield washer switch or just replace the whole...


The turn signal switch or in Ford terms "multi-function" switch is easy to replace if you are mechanically inclined. Lower the steering column "tilt" adjustment for easier access. Remove the lower panel (below the steering column). Remove the three screws from the plastic column covers that surround the multi-function switch. Turn the key to the run position, then from the bottom side of the column, use a very small pocket screwdriver, allen wrench or similiar tool to push up on the ignition cylinder release pin. The hole is located just below the cylinder. With the pin pushed, pull out on the key and cylinder. Next seperate the two cover halves and you will see the complete multi-function switch. remove the two attaching screws, remove the electrical connectors and replace the switch. Replace all removed components and you're done! You can purchase the switch at most auto parts stores, ford dealers or ebay. How to change ignition lock cylinder


Ignition Lock Cylinder REMOVAL & INSTALLATION NOTE: On 1974-76 models, equipped with A.C.R.S. perform the special procedure for removing the air cushion module from the steering wheel if necessary, prior to removing the lock cylinder. Standard Steering Column
  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2. Remove the lockplate cover assembly.
  3. After compressing the lockplate spring, remove the snapring from the groove in the shaft. CAUTION
    When the snapring is removed do not allow the shaft to slide out the bottom of the column.
  4. Remove the lockplate, then slide the turn signal cam and the upper bearing preload spring off the upper steering shaft.
  5. Remove the thrust washer from the shaft.
  6. Remove the hazard warning switch from the column along with the turn signal lever.
  7. Use the following procedure if the car is equipped with cruise control.
    1. Attach a piece of stiff wire to the connector on the cruise control switch harness.
    2. Gently pull the harness up and out of the column.
  8. Remove the turn signal switch mounting screws.
  9. Slide the switch connector out of the bracket on the steering column.
  10. After freeing the switch wiring protector from its mounting, pull the turn signal switch straight up and remove the switch, switch harness and the connector from the column.
  11. Turn the ignition switch to ON or RUN, then insert a small drift pin into the slot next to the switch mounting screw boss. Push the lock cylinder tab and remove the lock cylinder.

Tilt Column
  1. Remove the steering wheel.
  2. Remove the rubber sleeve bumper from the steering shaft.
  3. Using an appropriate tool, remove the plastic retainer.
  4. Using a spring compressor, depress the upper steering shaft spring and remove the C-ring. Release the steering shaft lockplate, the horn contact carrier, and the upper steering shaft preload spring.
  5. Remove the four screws which hold the upper mounting bracket, then remove the bracket.
  6. Slide the harness connector out of the bracket on the steering column. Tape the upper part of the harness and connector.
  7. Disconnect the hazard button and position the shift bowl in Park. Remove the turn signal lever from the column.
  8. Use the following procedure for cars with cruise control.
    1. Remove the harness protector from the harness.
    2. Attach a piece of piano wire to the switch harness connector.
    3. Before removing the turn signal lever, loop a piece of piano wire and insert it into the turn signal lever opening. Using the wire, pull the cruise control harness out through the opening.
    4. Pull the rest of the harness up through and out of the column.
    5. Remove the guide wire from the connector and secure the wire to the column.
    6. Remove the turn signal level.
  9. Pull the turn signal switch up until the end connector is within the shift bowl. Remove the hazard flasher lever. Allow the switch to hang.
  10. Place the ignition key in the run position.
  11. Depress the center of the lock cylinder retaining tab with a small prytool, then remove the lock cylinder. On some model remove the lock cylinder retaining screw. To install:
  12. When assembling the lock cylinder, rotate the key to the stop position while holding the cylinder and push the cylinder in all the way.
  13. Install the retaining screw on those models so equipped, and tighten to 40 inch lbs. (4.5 Nm).

How to replace the turn signal switch in a 1992 Cadilac?


Turn Signal Switch REMOVAL & INSTALLATION CAUTION
Some models covered by this manual may be equipped with a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), which uses an air bag. Whenever working near any of the SRS components, such as the impact sensors, the air bag module, steering column, and instrument panel disable the SRS. Deville, Eldorado, Seville, and Fleetwood - Early Models
  1. Disable the SIR system.
    1. On Deville and Fleetwood, remove the left lower sound insulator. On Eldorado and Seville, remove the left side sound insulator.
    2. Remove the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and detach the yellow 2-way connector at the base of the steering column.
    3. Remove the steering wheel.
    4. Make sure the ignition switch is in the LOCK position to prevent the SIR coil assembly from going off-center.
  2. Remove the SIR coil assembly retaining ring and the coil assembly. Allow the coil to hang freely. WARNING
    The SIR coil assembly will become off-center if the steering column is separated from the steering gear and is allowed to rotate or if the centering spring is pushed down, letting the hub rotate while the coil is removed from the column.
  3. Remove the wave washer.
  4. Use tool J-23653-C or equivalents, to depress the shaft lock, then remove and discard the shaft lock retaining ring.
  5. Remove the shaft lock.
  6. Remove the turn signal canceling cam assembly.
  7. Remove the upper bearing spring, upper bearing inner race seat and inner race.
  8. Move the turn signal switch to the RIGHT TURN position.
  9. On Deville, Fleetwood, and 1990 Eldorado, and Seville, remove the multi-function turn signal lever as follows:
    1. Make sure the lever is in the OFF position.
    2. Remove the access cover from the steering column housing.
    3. Detach the cruise control wiring connector. Note the position of the connector when installed in the column.
    4. Pull the lever straight out of the turn signal switch.
  10. On Eldorado and Seville, remove the multi-function turn signal lever as follows:
    1. On 1992-93 vehicles, slide the connector cover toward the front of the vehicle.
    2. Unplug the electrical connector. On 1991 vehicles, note the position of the connector when installed in the column.
    3. Push the lever straight in, rotate clockwise 1?4 turn and pull the lever out of the switch.
  11. On Deville, Fleetwood, and Eldorado and Seville, remove the screw, button, spring, and hazard warning switch knob.
  12. On Deville and Fleetwood, remove the one signal switch arm retaining screw. On Eldorado and Seville, remove the 2 signal switch arm retaining screws. Remove the signal switch arm.
  13. Remove the turn signal switch retaining screws.
  14. Remove the wiring protector and detach the turn signal switch connector.
  15. Gently pull the wire harness through the column and remove the turn signal switch. prev.gif next.gif

My car's horn actives every time I turn the steering wheel. What do you think is causing it to go off?


My 2000 Cirrus had the same problem.

Before I describe how I fixed mine, a warning and disclaimer:
Working on the horn switch, clock spring and steering column requires working safely with the air bag module. An airbag that goes off unintentionally can cause serious or fatal injuries. If you don't know how to handle the air bag safely, do not attempt to fix this yourself!

Symptom: Horn sounds when steering wheel is turned or with slight movement of the air bag module in the center of the steering wheel.

Possible causes:
1. Deteriorated insulators under the air bag mounting bracket screws. (This is what caused the problem in my case.)
2. Warped or bent steering wheel or air bag module.
3. Short circuit in clock spring assembly.
4. Short circuit in steering column due to abraded or pinched wire.
5. Faulty horn relay. (Very unlikely if the horn only sounds when turning the wheel.)

How the "horn switch" works: The term "horn switch" is a bit of a misnomer because there is no identifiable "switch" as one might think. The "switch" is actually a combination of parts: The four air bag bracket mounting screws, four plastic bushings and washers that insulate the air bag mounting brackets from the screws which are fastened to the grounded steering column, four springs under the bushings and the metal back side of the airbag module. The horn wire, which comes from the horn relay up the steering column and through he clock spring, is connected to the left hand mounting bracket which is electrically connected to the back of the airbag module which is electrically connected to the right hand mounting bracket when everything is assembled. When the air bag module is pushed in, the metal back contacts one or more of the four air bag module mounting screws completing the circuit to ground and thus activating the horn relay.

Troubleshooting:
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal on the strut tower under the hood and pull the two 10 A air bag fuses from the fuse panel on the left side of the dash.

WARNING!: WAIT TWO MINUTES TO ALLOW THE AIR BAG SYSTEM CAPACITOR TO DISCHARGE BEFORE PROCEEDING. NEVER DISCONNECT OR RECONNECT THE AIR BAG MODULE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR UNLESS THE NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED FOR AT LEAST TWO MINUTES. FAILURE TO HEED THIS WARNING COULD RESULT IN UNEXPECTED DEPLOYMENT OF THE AIR BAG RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH.

2. Loosen the two torx head screws on the back of the steering wheel that secure the air bag module to the wheel. The screws are captive in plastic retainers, so don't try to remove them.

3. Remove the air bag module, pull out the connector lock and disconnect the air bag module connector.

4. Place the air bag module on a flat surface connector side down away from where you are working.

5. Locate the four air bag mounting bracket screws. Look for black gritty debris around the screw heads and inside the steering wheel. This is an indication that the top insulating washers have deteriorated allowing the mounting brackets to short out to the screws.

6. Now reconnect the battery negative lead and do the following tests:

a. Move the left hand bracket slightly. If the horn sounds, then the top side insulating washers are either gone or deteriorated. If you want to test the right hand bracket, you will need to connect a jumper wire between the brackets. If one washer is cracked or missing, it is likely they all are.

b. Disconnect the horn wire from the left hand bracket. Start the car and turn the steering wheel to the stop in both directions. If the horn still sounds, then you have either a bad clock spring or a short circuit in the steering column.

The repair if the insulating washers are bad:

The official Chrysler repair manual says to replace the steering wheel (about $260); however, there is a cheaper solution.

1. Remove the four air bag bracket mounting screws, bushings, springs and the two brackets, paying careful attention to how they are assembled so you can re-assemble them later.

2. Clean any debris, dirt and grease from the brackets and undersides of the screw heads.

3. Purchase or fabricate some thin insulating (plastic) washers to replace the ones that deteriorated, which unfortunately you cannot buy from Chrysler. I insulated my brackets and screws with kapton insulating tape plus some very thin plastic washers I cut from some blister pack packaging scrap (probably clear polystyrene). This plastic is very thin, but still is pretty tough. Some hollow punches are handy for punching the holes and making nice round washers, but you could probably do it with small scissors or your wife's scrapbook punches if you are careful.

4. Reassemble the air bag mounting brackets to the steering wheel placing the new insulating washers and/or tape between the screw heads and brackets.

5. Reconnect the horn wire to the left hand bracket and move the bracket around a bit. If the horn doesn't sound, then you likely have fixed the problem. Once again, to test the right hand bracket, you need to jumper the left and right brackets together.

6. Disconnect the negative battery lead and wait at least two minutes before proceeding to ensure the air bag capacitor is discharged.

7. Reconnect the air bag connector to the air bag module and insert connector lock.

8. Reassemble the air bag module to the steering wheel.

9. Reconnect the negative battery lead and test the horn. It should blow only when the air bag module is pushed in. Start the car and turn the wheel to both extremes to test the repair.
If the horn sounds continuously, then the washers you put in are two thick causing the air bag module to rest on the screw heads.

10. Turn the car off and reinsert the two 10 A air bag fuses, then restart the car and make sure the air bag light comes on briefly then goes off.

My lef turn signal stays on when i use it all the bulbs are working i think it is the the relay swich if so wich one is it?


If your signal light stays solid when you go to use your signal, then one of your bulbs has burned out.

Depending on the bulb that burns, it'll either flash rapidly, or just stay solid

I have a 87 blazer s10... the turnswitch /wiper/highbeam switch is broken and is shorting out my brakelights ..i cant seem to get to it.. took the steering weel off but ..?


Unfortunately there are some special tools required you will need to get to the turn-signal switch. Below is the procedure for replacing the turn-signal switch. Generally you can rent the puller from a local auto parts jobber or you can purchase one.

Many vehicles use a turn signal switch that is separate from the multifunction switch. The steering wheel will have to be removed to gain access to the turn signal switch on these vehicles. The following procedure is a common method of turn signal switch replacement:
  • Place the fender covers on the fenders.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Remove the steering column trim.
  • Remove the horn pad from the steering wheel.

  • Remove the steering wheel and horn collar.
  • Use a suitable puller to remove the steering wheel.
  • With a suitable compressor, compress the preload spring to the lock plate. Compress the spring only enough to remove the snap ring.

  • Use a pick and a small flat blade screwdriver to remove the snap ring.
  • Remove the lock plate, horn contact carrier, and spring.
  • Remove the bolts at the upper steering column support and the upper mounting bracket from the column.
  • Disconnect the turn signal wiring connector.
  • Wrap tape around the wire and connector.
  • Remove the hazard warning knob from the column.
  • Remove the switch retaining screws and remove the switch.

  • Replace the switch and reverse these procedures for reinstallation.

Horn blows when steering wheel is turned. Is is a short?


this is caused by a defective/shorted rotating ribbon contact under the steering wheel called a clock spring, to replace this part u must disarm the airbag remove it and the steering wheel and then replace the clock spring, this is a dealer only part.
