40 foot pounds is good. But use locktite on each bolt.

I just replaced my engine for a 06 chrysler 300. Started up fine. But when I put it in gear i get this knocking noise from the bell housing area.


You either left the torque converter bolts loose or the flex plate (flywheel) is Cracked, Usually around crankshaft flange. You can check the bolts without removing the engine, but the flex plate will require engine removal. Look in inspection opening while engine is running and check for run out (rotational wobble) of flex plate. This condition will cause extensive damage to torque converter and front pump seal in the transmission.

When replacing a automatic transaxle on 2006 Mazda how do I match up torque converter to the driveplate?


it will only line up one way ,so try by putting in one bolt then rotate converter and flex plate if the next hole lines up put a bolt in it DONT TORQUE ANY TILL ALL ARE IN . if the holes don't match up take out bolt and rotate flex plate by one bolt hole and so on till you find the right bolt pattern then bring in all bolts then torque them .Good luck Woody

Hello Carl, Yes, I have seen this. New torque converters are balanced before they leave the factory. I think yours slipped past Quality Control. Did they replace the flex plate at the same time? Flex plates are also balanced. Maybe that is your vibration. Either way, the repair shop should redo the job right for free. Good luck. Let us know.

The shift solenoids are inside of the transmission and the lock up converter is what connects the input of the transmission to the output of the engine. It is inside of the bell housing and is bolted to the flex plate.

An automatic doesn't have a flywheel, it has a flex plate instead. The torque converter makes it act a lot like a flywheel, though.

But... you're probably talking about the flex plate or the ring gear around its edge. This is going to require removing the engine from the vehicle - there's no other possible way to get the flex plate out.

Once the engine is sitting on the shop floor, it's a simple job to replace the flex plate - first you unbolt the torque converter and set it aside, then you unbolt the flex plate from the crankshaft. Bolt the new flex plate onto the crankshaft, bolt the torque converter to the new flex plate, and put the engine back into the vehicle.

Actually...
an automatic transmission does not use a flywheel; the torque converter is heavy enough to provide the inertia necessary.
The torque converter connects to the flex plate and the flex plate connects to the crankshaft. On an automatic transmission, the flex plate is the part that has the starter gear.

The inspection cover is usually plastic, it is bolted to the under-side of the bell-housing and it is held in place usually by 4 small bolts, and once you remove them the inspection cover should come out. (you might also have to remove the starter on some applications)

After you have removed the inspection cover most of the flex-plate and the torque converter will be exposed. Turn the engine over and use a good light to inspect for damage to the flex-plate, and also check to see if the torque converter to flex-plate bolts are tight when they revolve into a position where you can attach a good ratchet.

Does a torque converter for a 1989 ford bronco trwo have antyhing to do with a fly wheel


The torque converter bolts to the flex plate at the rear of the engine. It supplies the link between the engine to the transmission.

It's known as a "Flex Plate" and not a "Fly Wheel". The flywheel is use on a standard transmission.
