2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Truck Code P0441 indicates that a part of the EVAP control system is no longer functioning correctly. The EVAP system consists of many parts, including (but not limited to) the gas cap, fuel lines, carbon canister, purge valve, and other hoses. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
EVAP emission canister purge is controlled by a valve which allows engine vacuum to pull stored fuel vapors from fuel tank into the engine to be burned, rather than be vented to atmosphere. A vacuum switch is used to detect when flow exists. If the PCM commands purge and sees that the switch is closed (indicating no detected purge flow) P0441 is set.

Symptoms :

Likely, no symptoms will be discernible to the driver, other than the illuminated Check Engine Light.

Causes :

A code P0441 could mean one or more of the following has happened:

97 dodge ram1500 5.9 Between 65 and 75mph truck makes a violent like shudder. Rpms stop about200 and check engine light comes on with code p0441. I know what the code is but no idea where too start. And...


code p0441 refers to evaporative emission (EVAP) system--incorrect flow detected== causes--hose connections---intake leak==EVAP canister purge valve
I would start at the purge valve because if the tank is not venting properly there will be either a pressure build up which will over fuel the engine ( too rich) or the fuel pressure will be too low (vacuum in the tank not allowing the pump to keep pressure up) which will result in random misfires.

The code is for a large leak in the EVAP system such as a loose or missing gas cap. But it could also mean a loose or missing hose to the canister or other leak in the tank.
The computer vents the tank several times an hour while the engine is running, and it checks the system by pressurizing the gas tank. If the tank will not hold pressure the code is set.
You may have to check the top of the tank where the fuel pump gasket is, as well as the vent lines to the front of the car.
A mechanic would perform a smoke test to look for leaks.

P0440 small evap leak, If it was purge at fault the PCM would give you a purge failure code, If it was that vacuum leak you are hearing you would of have lean bank code, anything with the evap in the engine compartment is purge,the back where the fuel tank is or the canister is evap. so you have evap problem,slow leak a broken hose would be gross leak detected. as for electrical it would be solenoid evap.fix the gas cap. 3_17_2012_9_11_41_pm.jpg

The EVAP leak detection generally concerns the fuel tank to carbon cannister plumbing. A little background. The EVAP or evaporative emission system is a control system to keep vapors from evaporation in the fuel tank from getting into the atmosphere. The fuel tank is not vented, but rather the vapors are piped to the carbon cannister (usually located behind the pass. side front wheel) where the charcoal element absorbs the vapor. This is actually a vapor "storage" device. Under certain engine operating conditions, the ECU activates the Cannister Purge Valve (N80) which opens and allows the engine vacuum to **** the fuel vapors back out of the carbon cannister. This purges the vapor, allowing the cannister to absorb more vapor. This evap system has been on vehicles since the '70s. As part of the OBDII standard effective for 1996 cars and newer, it was mandated that leaks in the systems must be detected and reported as a fault which will set the Check Engine Light (CEL). To detect leaks, the system is pressurized by a pump so that leaks can be detected by a lack of appropriate pressure in the system. your caravan has a system to control fumes from the gas tank .. any evaporating fuel is absorbed into a canister .. that is connected to a evap/purge solenoid in the engine compartment that directs the fumes to be burned in the engine once its running .. .. the problem can be as simple as a damaged or leaking or wrong type gas cap .. if the gas cap doesnt seal well then air can be drawn into the evaporitive control system ... also if any of the hoses from the evap/purge solenoid to the canister (located near the gas tank) are cracked or loose, you will get the same results .. some of these hoses are rubber .. some are hard plastic .. sometimes they come loose at the canister and need a clamp added ... the evap/purge solenoid could also be bad but much more likely the gas cap is just bad, bent or wrong ..

I have a p0441 fault on my 2003 dodge neon. i changed the canister purge solenoid and the light went off for about a month and just came back on what could cause this?
