yes ,it is possible to remove the axles with the transmission still in the vehicle
on some vehicles oyu undo the axle nut , turn on full opposite lock and the shaft will come out of the hub and on others you have to undo the suspension ball joint to get enough space to pull the shaft out of the hub

What most people see as a harsh transmission shift when transitioning from forward gears to reverse gear is really just the drive train taking up the slack in the connections. You need to realize that over time the universal joints in the drive shaft, as well as the pinion and ring gears in the rear differential will experience wear. When you are going forward the drive shaft is turning one direction, the u-joints and differential gears are all taking stress one one particular side. When you shift to reverse, everything reverses. So, the first thing to happen is the front u-joint changes direction. There will be a small amount of slack in the joint from wear. This slack will cause an irregular motion while it is taken up. This irregular motion is propagated to the rear u-joint, which must do the same. It will induce additional irregular motion, which is passed to the pinion and ring gears in the rear differential. In a new car/truck, you won't hardly notice this since all the wear surfaces are new and at factory tolerances. Give the vehicle 60-100K miles or more of hard wear and the result of this shifting to reverse can be a relatively loud clunking noise that can shake the vehicle. Replacement of u-joints can alleviate some of the issue, but the rear end wear can only be addressed with replacement. But as we say.....if it ain't really broke, why fix it?

My 2000 bmw 528i will sometimes shimmy a lot when i hit a small rut or bump in the road why


Assuming average miles, a 2000 is probably due for control arm bushings. If the car wants to follow road irregularities, especially as you are slowing down, it is time.
A shimmy, however, is often associated with worn ball joints. Not quite as common on a car this age, but definitely something you want to check out and take care of ASAP.
For this car, they don't sell the bushings and ball joints as loose parts. They sell the arm with the bushing and ball joint already pressed in. Not cheap, but the money you save on installation labor makes up for the higher cost of the part.

When I am in 4H there is an irregular clunk miss shudder when I am over 40 km/h or going uphill. Took the wheels off, all ok there. It does one more shudder clunk when I shift out of 4H to 2wd.


Inspect you universal joints all along the drive shaft - I suspect you have one going out. With the vehicle in park or 1st gear and the wheels blocked, raise the vehicle so you can get underneath. Grab drive shaft and wiggle with sharp movements, watching for movement between the yokes and drive shaft and looking for dry sockets, excessive grease on the yokes, shaft, or U - joints themselves. If you have more than 1/16 inch movement then you have a U - joint going and need to change it out. It would also help to grease the U - joints through the grease zerks if your U -joints have them - many times the original joints will not have zerks.

The upper ball joint is an integral part of the upper control arm and the lower ball joint is an integral part of the spindle.

U-joint replacement


Yes, but the cost of the u-joints/cv-joints (both ends) plus the labor involved in swapping out the u-joints, make a good argument for just replacing the half shaft as a unit. It's a lot quicker and cleaner.

Thumping noise


2 things I would inspect, your motor mounts, and CV joints. If worn, one or both could cause what your experiencing. See if you can figure out where grinding is coming from, right or left side & check drive shaft CV joint on that side especially. Look close at both boots on them for rips or holes, where dirt has been entering.
P.S. a sloppy/worn CV joint can end up causing irregular wear on transmission as well, so don't let it go too long, if at all.

My CV's are clicking and i need to replace them what are the steps to replace both the Passenger and drivers side?


I've never changed cv joints on a Ford, but my experience w/ other vehicles has been the realization that it's a tough job, lots of labor involved. You can do it, but u really have to get a good repair manual so u can see illustrations, and follow the many steps involved. Pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual (available online, or many parts stores), or subscribe to an online repair source like e-mitchell. To list all that's involved here would take too much time and space. Good luck, u can do it! countrycurt0
