Check the dealer for a recall. That tranny is problematic.

SOURCE: 1998 VW Beetle 5-speed trouble getting it in to

I have a 1998 VW Beetle and when I first bought it, (used) shifting into first was the same action for shifting into reverse. They were so close I usually went into first when trying for reverse. I took it to a transmission shop and they replaced part of the shift linkage that is famous for wearing. It cost me maybe $60.00. Now she shifts like a new car.

Is making a clacking noise when i brake and start to drive now left me stranded will not move when i put it on drive it does reverse thought

Sounds like the transmission has failed. Sometimes the drive shaft joints fail and only lock up in one direction but very rare.

Constant clacking accelerating and that is worse on turns under light load is CV joints badly worn.

Seems you may have internal transmission failure of the forward clutch assembly. On VW automatics it is best to find a used transmission or factory replacement.

On a standard 5 speed transmission, used is always better. ....look on CAR PARTS.COM
Check with the VW dealer to make sure you are not covered under the Power Train Warranty.

Where is the oil cap on a 1973 Volkswagon Beetle?

The oil cap is just in front of the generator, slightly to the left and angled to the left(towards the passenger side)(right as you are looking at it). If this is your first VW Beetle(type 1), it would be beneficial to pick up the book "How to keep your VW alive and running. A guide for the complete idiot". It is a must have book for anyone who has a veedub and wants to do any work on it themselves. Almost anyone who has bought one has had this book since the late 70's. It explains everything in an understandalbe format and is kind of funny too! Let me know if you need anything else.

If the check engine light is on look at the faults. It could be a defective cam sensor, the timing belt might not be in the place, or a defective mass air flow sensor.
