Question about Ford Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

2002 Ford Escape 4x4 XLT 3.0 V6 My rear diff housing broke. Is it possible to just disconnect it (leaving me without 4 wheel drive) to safely drive it and no longer have the gears grinding on each other? As the diff housing itself has a piece missing from it so no gear oil will stay inside of it. The cost to replace is just out of the question for me at this time. Just need it so the rear wheels will spin independent from each other, not connected to the drive shaft and gears not turning on the other ones. I read that if i remove the pin holding the gears in the box that they will just fall out, is that the case? Thanks

You will NEED TO BUY a new axle housing from Jasper
or other vendor

I don't know if they will even give you core credit on that one

You surely must know the vehicle has to be parked

The rear axles-- if they even turn-- will not have any gear lube
to the end housing bearings

Your done & need other transportation

Why did it break the housing?

Even if it ran dry & seized I doubt that happens often

Testimonial: "Unsure why the housing itself broke but there is about a 2 inch chunk missing from the passenger side of it."

Disconnected rear differential

You must have a 4 Wheel-drive. You should have a driveshaft for that end of the vehicle and you should not let the Mechanic keep it. The rear unit must have a bad Pinion bearing or more damaged parts. Some of parts can "freewheel" without having power going through them.

But the metal shavings from broken parts can travel inside the differential and cause more problems. You don't always need the 4-wheel drive function and you do not have it since the Mechanic disconnected it.

Sometimes it can be what is called an "axle" bearing. Each side has this part so you have 2. The noise levels for this part can also change when the 4 wheel drive is engaged.

Make sure the rear differential has lube. Read the Web for articles about your vehicle. Search "2003 Ford Escape rear differential".

There is a Salvage yard site called Car-parts.com which is good for locating used parts like differentials. One would need to match the same gear ratio as the front.

Ford explorer 2000 all wheel drive not working

all wheel drive vehicles have to work at both ends all the time unless you have a major failure in the drive train. That is why it is called all wheel drive as opposed to 4 wheel drive. With 4 wheel drive you have the option of rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive and normally in a high ratio or low ratio gear selection. With some all wheel drive vehicles there is a selector that locks the middle diff and creates a 4 wheel drive option without the high/low gear ratio option. So in practice if the both front wheels are in the bog then there is no all wheel drive as the centre diff is working as it should and placing all the action in the rear wheels which will not be turning as they have traction so the front wheels spin faster.. If you have a centre diff lock option ensure that it is operational.

Wheel get locked up in 4x4

I know what they did!, and the only thing you can do is take it back to the dealer. They have put in a different diff ratio. jack up one side of your car with 4X4 rotate your wheels your front diff goes 5 revolutions and your rear may turn 4 or 6 turns, when your wheels turn at different rates it increases the load on your drive line, if your wheels don't slip you must break something

Vacuum hose disconnected from front diff on drvers side ,I dont know where it goes on 1991 ford ranger xlt 4x4

Didn't think there was any vacuum on that diff, there is however a vent
that has a rubber hose on it. If just runs from the housing up to the
sheet metal to keep water from getting in the vent. Not sure if yours
is disconnected from the axle or the body. If it's still hooked to the diff.
just zip tie it up as high as you can,Don't forget the axle will fall
with the weight off (bumps and such) so leave a bit of slack.
If it's the diff end that's unhooked there is a nipple that the hose plugs
into, think it's on the long axle tube ,on top.

I have a 2001 ford escape xlt 4 wheel drive. i had a diagnostic test done & it said it detected a misfire in cylinder 3. i am a do it yourselfer and am going to change all 6 spark plugs but the problem...

I am assuming that you have a V6 Engine because 1, 3 and 5 would be on the other side of 2, 4 and 6. A Striaght in line engine would have them all in a row.

But another way to locate your spark plugs would be to find your Spark plug wires and follow them to the spark plug.

Good Luck
