99 Ford F-150 won't go into 4wheel drive I looked undernieth and front drive shaft is not turning

Checked to see if drive shaft is turning it is not the lights on the dash lite up and says It is in 4 wheel drive I checked the cylanoids on fire wall behind battery I have vacume at all time S truck is running

Is it push button 4WLD OR manual hubs and manual transfer case .sounds like the the electronic switch on the transfer case is not locking in the drive shaft but the indication light is just letting you know the hubs are locked check the electronics on t-case remove the accuator and engage it manually or take it to a trans shop that give free estimates find the problem and D.I.Y.

Sounds like transfer case motor is defective. The vacuum only does front diff on most trucks. The transfer case is the only thing that engages front drive shaft (between transfer case and front diff). First, check all fuses. Even if u have to pull out one at a time, check all fuses!! I have seen fuse problems more than anything....if fuses check out, then Remove motor on transfer case. Usually on rear of case. See if u can manually turn shaft. It should have 3 positions. 2-high, 4-high, 4-low.....
Turning shaft to 4-high or low should lock in front drive shaft and rule out any major problems with transfer case. Just like having an old style shifter in the floor. All your doing is manually engaging transfer case. If front shaft locks in, most likely bad motor.. The only other thing that can cause your problem is defective 4x4 module... But very rare to have bad module..

    it is a manual shift transfer case like the old style a lever coming thru the floor would it still have a motor on the case I have had transfer cases go bad in the past and both times you could hear the chain slipping inside the case

    I really appreciate any input you may have on this topic I do a lot of plowing in the winter have a lot of people depending on me to make sure they can get out of driveway to go to work I wasn't sure if it would still have a shift motor being it is a floor shift transfer case thank u in advance

    I am so sorry about that. I should have asked if it was pushbutton or manual lever. It sounds like you got a bad transfer case I would definitely check linkage to make sure that it's move-in the small lever at transfer case but after that it's internal damage transfer case. Again I'm sorry for telling you information that you didn't even need

Someone will have to go under and check the linkage is working when the 4 wheel drive is fully engaged and not just moved to a neutral position.

Check your hubs lift front end if wheel does not turn when locked in 4x4 then hubs are not engaging turn wheel by hand or a pipe wrench on drive shaft do not try power unless all wheels are lifted

KinlogworksI have A 2003 F-150 Super Crew. I have only used th4 wheel drive a few dozen times. about a mounth ago i switched it into 4 high and nothing happened. problem also in 4 low. any advise?


Operationally vacuum shifts the front axle between 2WD and 4WD mode. The GEM ( Generic Electronics Module ) applies ground to the solenoid needed for the mode selected on the switch ( for ESOF ) or when the transfer case shift lever is moved ( MSOF ). The contact plates in the transfer case signal the GEM that the transfer case is engaged, and the Vacuum solenoids need to be activated ( either 2WD to 4WD or 4WD to 2WD ).

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
- If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
- If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
•With the truck running ( with front wheel back on the ground ), switch from 2WD to 4WD and back again, the vacuum shift motor should move the lever on the front axle.

-- If the vacuum shift motor does not move:
•Check for vacuum on the lines while shifting between modes. Pink vacuum line is 2WD mode, Light Blue vacuum line is 4WD.
•Check the fuses for the 4WD system and the solenoids.
•Check the vacuum lines from the vacuum shift motor to the solenoids on the firewall.
•Check the vacuum lines from the solenoids to the vacuum reservoir box behind the battery.
•Check the vacuum reservoir box for cracks.
•Typical solution is the vacuum lines ( to the solenoids or to the vacuum shift motor ) are cracked or the vacuum shift motor has a cracked diaphragm and has water in it.
•Could be the shift plate contacts in the transfer case are corroded / not making good contact, and not activating the solenoids.

-- Try hitting the transfer case with a dead blow hammer ( do not use a metal hammer, it can damage the transfer case ) to see if the transfer case shift motor is hung up .
-- Check the transfer case connector, to make sure the connector pins are clean and making good contact.
•For MSOF systems
-- Check that the shift linkage on the transfer case is moving when the lever is moved from 2W to 4H and 4L.

2003 F-150 regular cab automatic transmission and the 4WD will not engage.

Transfer case on 2006 F150 will engage but no power to front wheels?


SOUNDS LIKE A BAD HUB TRY THIS TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM

Put the transmission in park, set the parking brake and raise the chassis so one of the front wheels is off the ground while the other is still on the ground. When the transfer case is in two-wheel drive, the hubs should be released allowing the wheels to turn freely when spun by hand. If the axle shaft turns when you spin the wheel, it means the hub has not disengaged.
To check engagement, rotate the axle shaft backwards. This should lock the hub. Try turning the wheel by hand again. The axle shaft should now turn with the wheel if the hub is locked. If the hub fails to lock, the hub will have to be disassembled and inspected or replaced.
To check release, hold the axle shaft steady and rotate the wheel backwards. You should hear a click as the locking mechanism slides back out and disengages the hub. Rotate the wheel forward again and it should turn freely.
Another way to check the hubs is to raise the vehicle on a frame contact lift so all four wheels are off the ground. Then start the engine and place the transfer case in four-wheel drive and the transmission in drive. If the front wheels don't turn, look at the front axle shafts. If both shafts are turning, but one wheel is not, the problem is a bad hub on the wheel that isn't turning. If the front driveshafts are not turning when the transfer case is in four-wheel drive, the problem is inside the differential (broken side gears) or the transfer case (broken chain, shift linkage, etc.). If the driveshaft between the transfer case and differential is turning, the problem is in the differential. If the driveshaft is not turning, the vehicle is going to need repairs to the transfer case.

I have a ford f 150,v8 engine and my 4 wheel drive wont work now, can it be just a fuse?


Is the system ESOF ( Electronic Shift On the Fly ) or MSOF ( Mechanical Shift On the Fly ) ?

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

I would suspect that the front drive shaft does not turn, and the issue is with the vacuum lines for the front axle.

You can check the vacuum lines with the engine running, and have a vacuum gauge on the front disconnect motor. Pink line is 2WD operation ( unlocks the front axle ) Light Blue is the 4WD operation ( locks the axle ).

The disconnect motor is on the front axle, item #10 in the picture below

Operationally vacuum holds the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) out, and once vac is removed the spring engages the IWE.
Usually the problem ( with 04-08 MY ) is the front axle will not disengage.

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
Shut of the truck ( still jacked up, and supported ) remove the vac lines from the IWE. The spring should push the gears in, without the vac line on. Actually any time the truck is not running, after the vacuum bleeds out, the front IWEs will engage while it is parked.

If the front axle turns, the shift motor ( on the ESOF ) would be the issue. Some times the connector on the back of the transfer case gets corroded and needs to be cleaned. Other problems could be a hung up shift motor, some have tapped on the back of the transfer case to free it up again.

If this is a 2004 Heritage ( old body style ) and the transfer case is known to lock in ( check with truck jacked up, shift into 4WD and try to turn front drive shaft ), the next item to look at is the vacuum disconnect motor for the front axle. This is on the front axle, and will move when shifted into 4WD

If you do not have movement in this, check the vacuum lines with a vacuum pressure gauge, to see if vacuum is being applied ( Pink line is 2WD w/ vacuum is operation, Blue line is 4WD w/ vacuum operation ). If no vacuum at the lines, check them back to the vacuum shift solenoids

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
Shut of the truck ( still jacked up, and supported ) remove the vac lines from the IWE. The spring should push the gears in, without the vac line on.
Check the vent line ( tube that is routed into the engine compartment with nothing attached to it ), for blockages.
If the vent line is clear, and with the vac lines off the IWE should be engaged ( both front wheels locked ).
If they lock, the problem is with the IWE solenoid not shutting off vacuum to the IWEs. There is a TSB on the 2004-2006 IWE solenoids, a newer revision has been made, and used from 2007 and newer MYs.

Front end grind when I turn left or right on 04 F150. I have replaced the power steering fluid and checked the bushings.


If this is a 4x4 it sounds like you have a bad front axle shaft look under the front wheels to see if the rubber boots are torn and grease comming out of them. If the look ok then the problem may be in the front differential.
