Question about 1999 Toyota 4Runner

3 Answers

1999 toyota 4 runner rear tires (brakes) keep locking up. they do not lock up in reverse, but when i put it into drive i have to give it a lot of gas before they "break free" then they are fine, but

Already brought it to two different mechanics, they couldn't figure it out: flushed break fluid, found my e-brake was coiled so cleaned and readjusted it. it stopped locking up after that for a little while, then the brakes started locking up again after couple days later. my brakes have been replaced recently and are in good condition. was thinking it was maybe the master cylinder? or a locked up parking brake pivot? any suggestions or ideas helpful

There are a lot things that can cause this I will list some that you can check . 1 hand brake cables binding. 2 Flex hose perished in side acting like a one way valve. 3 weak return springs on brake shoes. 4 pistons on rear brake cylinders sticking and slow to return. 5 master cylinder rod adjusted to long and not letting fluid return quickly. 6 Master cylinder rubber buckets swollen and covering fluid return port.

May I ask-- what in detail -- was done by these professionals?

How would it even be possible-- they found nothing?

Sounds like the parking cables, are rusted inside
& need to be replaced

At this point-- I would do all your own work

Instead of asking questions-- get it apart & verify your thoughts

Brakes replace ,RECENTLY, nothing funny there ??

Sloppy work & money spent-- so you now have bought a problem
--not there before?

If a shop can't do brake work-- they need to go out of business

Does your master cylinder--know if your going forward or backwards, don't think so

Locked up parking pivot--you just had someone in there,
so they did nothing or caused that also?

SOURCE: steering wheel vibration

Did they "turn" your rotors? They may have "improperly" turned your front rotors. This is common and they should correct this where you had the work done.

Sometimes when it is cold, I put my 2001 Tundra in drive and it dont want to move, like the brakes are locked. When I put it in reverse then bump into drive everything is fine

Lift the rear tire off the ground and see if the tire rotates? if it does then your brakes are fine. Now as far as the vehicle not wanting to move right away could be due to low tranny fluid level or internal leak down.

Check the fluid in the the axle. Also make sure the brake isn't locking up. You might want to take the axle gear cover off and see if the "C" clip came off or is broken on the gear assembly. Almost sounds like the differentials is locking up.

Rear drivers wheel locks up in drive is o.k. in reverse

If no oil on the driver side, you have a locked up parking brake pivot. Follow the park brake cable to the inside plate of the rear wheels. on the outside, where the cable connects, look to see the position of the visible mechanism connected to the cable. It probably will not match the side that is not locked up. This is a very common problem; you need to replace the park brake pivot. Additionally, you are going to need to remove the other side axle shaft and get the leaking oil seal replaced. Replace the brake shoes if they have oil on them.
