Transmission not engaging

Going downhill @ approx. 40 km,reached to the bottom and depress accelerator pedal and got no movement from vehicle. put trani into reverse nothing,drive 3,2,1 still nothing

You will have to take to someone with a diagnostic computer. There are so many things that can cause a transmission to quit on these later models that a computer is the only way to find out. Hope it is just something minor and easily fixed. I'll throw a couple handsfull of good luck towards you, maybe that will help!

Does yours have Electronic Shift on the Fly (ESOF) Operation The electronic shift on the fly (ESOF) system is an electronic shift 4x4 system that allows the operator to choose between two different 4x4 modes as well as 2-wheel drive. The operator can switch between 2WD and 4H mode at speeds up to 88 km/h (55 mph). To engage or disengage 4L range, the vehicle speed must be less than 5 km/h (3 mph), the brake pedal depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL. The transfer case is equipped with an electromagnetic clutch which is located inside the case. This clutch is used to spin up the front driveline when shifting from 2WD to 4H mode at speed. When the control switch on the instrument panel is turned, the generic electronic module (GEM) recognizes that a shift has been requested and activates the electromagnetic clutch and the relays which power the transfer case shift motor. When the shift motor reaches the desired position, as determined by the contact plate position inputs to the GEM, power to the shift relays and motors will be removed. When the transfer case front and rear output shafts are synchronized, the spring loaded lockup collar mechanically engages the mainshaft hub to the drive sprocket. Finally, the front axle collar is engaged and the electromagnetic clutch is deactivated.

After reading this material I would not think it was the switch . Maybe an input problem to the GEM module .

Cruise Control
Any given speed above approximately 22 mph (35 km/h) can be maintained with the cruise control by operating the lever.

  1. Accelerate and set: Lift lever briefly to set speed. Hold lever up to accelerate.
  2. Decelerate and set:
    Depress lever briefly to set speed. Hold lever down to decelerate.
    Normally the vehicle is accelerated to the desired speed with the accelerator. Speed is set by briefly pushing
    the lever to position 1 or 2. The accelerator can be released. The speed can be increased (e.g. for passing)
    by using the accelerator. As soon as the accelerator is released, the previously set speed will be resumed automatically. If a set speed is to be increased or decreased slightly, e.g. to adapt to the traffic flow, hold lever in position 1 or 2 until the desired speed is reached, or briefly tip the control lever in the appropriate direction for increases or decreases in 0.6 mph (1 km/h) increments. When the lever is released, the newly set speed remains.
  3. Canceling
To cancel the cruise control, briefly push lever to position 3.
When you step on the brake or the vehicle speed drops below approx. 22 rnph (35 km/h), for example when driving upgrade, the cruise control will be canceled.
4. Resume
If the lever is briefly pushed to position 4 when driving at a speed exceeding approx. 22 mph (35 km/h), the vehicle resumes the speed which was set prior to the cancellation of the cruise control. The last memorized speed is canceled when the key in the steering lock is turned to position 1 or 0.
Note:
If the engine does not brake the vehicle sufficiently while driving on a downgrade, the speed you set on the cruise control may be exceeded and you may have to step on the brake pedal to slow down.
As soon as the grade eases, the cruise controlled speed will again be maintained as long as the brakes were not previously applied, or the lever may be used to resume the previously set speed if the brakes were applied.

Car surging


Is the car equipped with the Automatic Transmission?
If so, read on.
Otherwise skip to the end and answer some questions.

POSSIBLE SCENARIO:
I have observed a condition where my car surges slightly when the torque-converter clutch (TCC) cycles between lock and unlock when driving on an uphill grade.
First some basics and history that will explain why the TCC is used.

Engine, Torque Converter, TCC, and Transmission relationship--
The TCC allows for a solid connection between the engine and transmission which allows the input to the transmission to rotate at the same speed as the engine.
Without a TCC, there is slippage between the engine and automatic transmission. The slippage is greatest at low engine RPM. That is what allows the engine to run with the automatic transmission in gear, like when you first shift into gear or stop at a stop sign. When the throttle pedal is depressed, the engine RPM begins to increase and the torque converter begins to slip less and less the more the engine RPM increases. The car moves. But even at cruising speeds the torque converter slips slightly. Engine RPM is greater than transmission input RPM, which is realized as slight decrease in fuel efficiency.
When acceleration is complete and a constant speed is being maintained, the engine power output is reduced to the point where the TCC can engage and eliminate any slippage between the engine and transmission. If the car has a tachometer the engagement of the TCC can be verified when a slight reduction in engine RPM observed without a corresponding change in vehicle speed.
One method used to test the operation of the TCC is as follows:
Find a flat section of road where it is safe to perform the test.
Reach a steady speed and keep the gas pedal depressed with one foot. While observing the tachometer (or listening for an increase in engine RPM), with the other foot depress the brake pedal enough to activate the break light switch but not enough to engage the brakes. When the brake light switch activates, the TCC receives a signal to disengage. With the gas pedal being held steady, release the brake pedal and the engine RPM should decrease when the TCC engages.
Old cars with Automatic Transmissions did not use a TCC. I believe the TCC was put in use in an attempt to increase fuel economy.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH SIMILAR SYMPTOMS
The condition that causes that issue on my car is this:
- A slight uphill grade increases the load on the engine.
The car tends to gradually slow and it is necessary to depress the gas pedal to maintain speed.
- Depressing the throttle pedal (manually, or automatically with cruise control engaged) signals the torque converter clutch to unlock when the load increases slightly. (A more drastic load increase would signal the Transmission to downshift to a lower gear.) The corresponding increase in engine RPM and output is enough to compensate for the reduction in speed. When the vehicle speed, engine RPM, and throttle position stabilize to the point that the TCC will engage and the engine RPM will reduce in correspondence with TCC engagement. Now, if the road conditions have not changed, power output is not enough to maintain vehicle speed. With the increased load caused by full engagement between engine and transmission, and the cycle (surging) repeats itself until the road conditions change.

Does the engine power output have a noticeable surge?
Is there a speed change related to the surge?
Does the tachometer move up and down with little or no change in vehicle speed?
Are all instrument indication in the normal range?
What else has changed?

My car dont go over 140 km/h even after pressing full throttle.


The floor mat under the accelerator pedal may be thick enough to restrict the pedal movement down the floor. Remove the mat or put a thin mat there. Hope that works.

HOW TO SHIFT TO 4 WHEEL DRIVE


Hi - Here is instruction how to do.

From N to 4H

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4H".

From 4H to 4H LOCK

You can operate the transfer switch either

when the vehicle is stopped or while the

vehicle is moving.

Position the front wheels straight ahead

and turn the switch to shift into "4H LOCK".

If the vehicle is moving, we recommend

that the speed be less than 100 km/h (60

mph) during this operation.

NOTE:

• When shifting between the transfer

switch position and the transfer gear

position is unmatched, all 4WD indicators

will blink and the buzzer will sound.

• If it is difficult to shift between "4H" and

"4H LOCK" while the vehicle is moving,

try accelerating and decelerating your

vehicle several times after turning the

transfer switch. Be sure to wait until traffic

conditions allow you to accelerate and

decelerate safety before using this procedure.

From 4H LOCK to 4L LOCK

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4L LOCK".

From 4L LOCK to 4H LOCK

Stop the vehicle completely, place the

transmission in "N" (Neutral) and depress

the brake pedal and the clutch pedal fully

(if equipped), then push in and turn the

switch to shift into "4H LOCK".

From 4H LOCK to 4H

You can operate the transfer switch either

when the vehicle is stopped or while the

vehicle is moving.

Position the front wheels straight ahead

and turn the switch to shift into "4H". If the

vehicle is moving, we recommend that the

speed be less than 100 km/h (60 mph) during

this operation.

NOTE:

• When shifting between the transfer

switch position and the transfer gear

blinks, then turn the switch to the "N" position.

When you turn the transfer switch to the

"N" position, "N" indicator will come on with

the buzzer sound.

CAUTION

• Be sure to stop the vehicle completely

before operating the transfer

switch to shift between "N" and

"4H", or between "4H LOCK" and

"4L LOCK".

• Do not shift between "4H" and "4H

LOCK" unless the front wheels are

in the straight-ahead position and

we recommend that the vehicle

speed be less than 100 km/h (60

mph).

Do not operate the transfer switch

while tires are racing.

• Do not operate your vehicle in "4H

three things to check

bad Universal Joint,
with the vehicle in park and the parking brake firmly set get under the vehicle and check for excessive play at either end of the driveshaft.

bad transmission mount
get a helper, have them start the vehicle and with the parking brake firmly set and the brake pedal depressed put it in reverse (DO NOT BE UNDER VEHICLE AND STAY CLEAR OF TIRES) , watch the driveshaft and transmission for movement.

bad motor mount
open the hood, have the helper once again start the engine and put the vehicle in reverse with the parking brake set and the brake pedal depressed, watch for excessive engine movement.

Mine did the same but at 120 km but i just pulled over put it in park and restarted it and there has been no problems since, this was 2 months ago

1985 4Runner 22RE (injected / auto trans) has NO accelaration.


From minor problem to major problem. Try to replace your spark plug wires, rotor cap and the spark plugs, also it can be the injectors, plus if possible, try to replace the fuel filter which is located low under your EFI unit. If problem not solved, then it will probably be your A/T trans.
