My knowledge and experience in veh. repairs is very limited yet I would think that an experienced mechanic/& blog poster would know that a harmonic balancer is not attached to a CAM shaft. Yet, the responding party to my question goes into an explanation of removing a CAM gear and re-setting the timing.

  • Noel Rivera Dec 05, 2014

For the Posters benefit; I'll explain that the FRONT MAIN SEAL surrounding the CRANK shaft (where the Harmonic balancer is attached) is leaking oil (a very common experience). It is NOT COMMON on a NEW harmonic balancer with a NEW seal in place. I have since purchased a sleave to go over the harmonic balancers shaft/flange/metal "thingy" that comes into contact with (said) FRONT MAIN SEAL in an effort to thicken/expand the shafts girth/diameter/circumfrence of what is making contact with the .... (here is comes again...) FRONT MAIN SEAL. New seal + new harmonic balancer with (no grooves etched into the shaft of 'said' NEW harmonic balancer) is leaking oil worst than the old harmonic balacer + New FRONT MAIN SEAL. Is there anyone out there that can help?

For the benefit of Randy Ohler ( thank you soooo much for trying to answer my question, BTW).... I reviewed my original post and mistated the area in question as the "front camshaft seal". My apologies to RANDY. Now knowing (in detail) where the area in question is; can you/or anyone offer some insight?

Replacing the cam seal. You had to pull the timing belt. Because you had to remove the cam gear. This is where the problem is. Reset the timing and follow the manual to exact procedures. I recommend you replace all the timing components. Also, when you set the timing belt tensioner, Pry on it to get maximum tension. Before you put it together, turn the crank shaft two full turns (by hand/wrench/socket. Make sure it is on the marks. then reassemble.

Well you really didn't say what went wrong, now did you? You only asked what went so wrong. So you are partially right, I shouldn't have assumed you didn't get the timing right. Now all you have to do is, Tell us what you messed up...

What are the steps in replacing the rear seal in a 1966 ford f-100 with a 352 engine?

I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't have to remove the engine/transmission, split the trans from the engine, remove the TC or clutch/pressure plate, (you should have drained engine oil and auto trans oil before doing this), remove the oil pan, remove the rear most main bearing cap, rotate a new seal into place, replace rear main bearing cap, torque, etc. and reassemble.

Worst case you may have to remove harmonic balancer and front timing chain cover, front seal, release all the connecting rod caps and main bearing caps, remove the crankshaft, replace the rear main seal and reassemble. It's a 1966 engine...you should consider replacing the front timing chain with a roller chain as well as rod and main bearing inserts if you have to do all this.

How do change crankshaft seal on toyto 4runner sr5 97

front seal --remove harmonic balancer/ front pulley
if it is a belt for the cam shafts set it on tdc no1 piston so that all the marks line up then remove the belt and the bottom pulley to get to the seal
if it is a chain the seal will be after the balancer
if it is a rear main seal, remove the transmission and flywheel
best advice is to get a workshop manual for the vehicle and follow the directions and photos closely

Step-by-step how do i change the front main seal on a 89 volvo 740 please.

Set engine to TDC #1. Remove all the belts including the Timing Belt, this is a good time to replace them all. Remove the Radiator and shroud. Then remove the Harmonic Balancer then remove the Timing Gear and rear washer. You should be able to see the seal, use a seal puller to remove the seal then replace it by gently tapping in the new one as evenly as possible. Reassemble in reverse order making sure that the Timing marks are in the correct position.

My steering wheel vibrates and shakes. I worry the steering will sieze up. What causes this problem and is it dangerous to drive while this is happening?

THE Steering wheel will only shake when either the wheels are out of balance {like weights come off or had a puncture etc} or wheel bearing worn badly,Tracking, out of alignment etc but can also be caused if only WHEN BRAKING it dose it that is the front Rotors have to be replaced and new Disc Pads also.

How do you replace the harmonic balancer pulley on the 2000 oldsmobile intrigue

The short answer to your question is:

1. Raise the car on the passenger side and remove the front wheel.
2. Remove the belts on the harmonic balancer.
3. Remove the retaining bolt.
4. With a puller, jack the harmonic balancer off of the crank shaft. You can rent a puller at your local auto parts store. It is easiest to access the harmonic balancer through the fender, hence the need to remove the wheel.
5. You should also consider replacing the seal around the harmonic balancer to minimize the possibility of a leak later.
6. Install the new harmonic balancer and tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque (I don't know this off the top of my head).
7. Replace the belts and wheel, and voila...mission accomplished.

This was a short answer to your question. You may wish to consult a repair manual for illustrations, torque specifications, additional instructions, etc. This job is not for the faint of heart. Good luck!

Front crankshaft seal, 1989 hilux

Hello,

Yes, it's possible to change the seal after removing the balancer.
If the balancer shows signs of scratching, wear at the place of the seal, change that part too!

To remove the old seal, drill 2 small opposite holes in the seal flange ( there is metal in it ).
Screw 2 (parker) screws in the holes, so you can pull the seal out gently.
Grease the new seals' inner race, and put some sealant paste to the external race.
Push it back in place with a wooden piece ( drill a hole in the center for the crankshaft end )
Grease the outher race of the balancer. This will help the seal come gently into place.

Good luck!

I dont know where the oil pump is on my 89 toyota

On a 22RE the oil pump is on the timing cover behind the crank pulley/harmonic balancer,it has the crank timing pointer built onto it,generally they don't leak around the pump seal but as Monster80 pointed out they leak from the front main seal wich is installed on the front of the oil pump, pretty common for the 22R/RE to leak around the timing cover gaskets or out the bolt holes on the timing cover also, usually due to uneven tourqe on the bolts,to check the front main seal you need to look at the the crank from the underside right after you've shut the motor down,if the seals bad you'll see oil starting to form a drop on the backside of the pulley or the front of the oil pump housing.
