If the carb is losing is "prime", that is, the float bowl on the carb is going dry, it means that the float is possibly stuck closed. Other options include a faulty fuel pump and a faulty fuel pressure regulator.

These engines also have a heating plate below the carburetor to heat the A-F mixture to better enable combustion in cold climates/cold start conditions. That plate would have overheat/melting issues, and affect warm engine & hot-weather driveability.

Check the fuel pump pressure. IF this is heat related, it could also be a bad gasket causing a vacuum leak. The other thing could be the fuel line is getting too hot causing the gasoline to create a vapor lock.

I have a 3208 cat engine that losing it prime when running , and when u got to take the filter of you lose all your fuel back into the tank , I'm thinking priming pump ????

if the priming pump is the type where you have to undo it to pump the piston and do it back up when you have primed the system then it is possible that the pump seals will be faulty. Many operators cannot be bothered with screwing the handle back down and so run into problems from worn out seals in the pump

Is there a thermostat shut off switch . car runs

The amount that it gets hot is a clue but theres no shut off switch. It's possible that the car is over heating and the temp gauge does'nt have enought water over it to report the problem. once the cooling system is cleared as it's full circulating and the fan will come on when it's hot ( disconnect the temp. switch on the therostate cover on the top of the transmission, ( the stat is in the lower hose ) with it disconnected and the key on the fan should be on and connected f till it's real hot. The crank senser or distrubutor module can can too hot and shut down too

I bought a '94 chevy p.u. project truck

Have you checked the temp sender? If the computer does not know the engine is cold it won't put enough fuel into the mixture to get it started.
If after starting it by priming, if you can get it to run, I'd look there.
Also on most systems the crank sensor will play a part in there as well...If the computer does not see a signal from there it will often shut down the fuel pulses to the injectors.
If simple testing does not show you anything, have a code test done and see at least which systems are showing faults and work from there. Chiltons and Haynes list individual component tests you can do to isolate a single component.

98 Buick Regal -engine quits

ok its one of two things you need to check when it cuts off if you have spark or fuel if you lose fuel pressure replace pump it gets hot and makes noise like its running but its not pumping fuel and if you lose spark you need to replace ignition control module has a hair line crack in it and when gets hot the crack expands and loses contact and wala no spark

1998 chvy 1500 loses power

check the intake gaskets. in the middle front and middle rear. If they are oily, it more than likely sucked part of the gasket in. When it warms up the leak gets bigger. The easy way to check is to get some carb cleaner and spray all around the intake while idling and warm. DO NOT SPRAY ANY EXHAUST PARTS , carb cleaner is combustible. The truck should stumble or even shut off when spraying with the carb cleaner if there is a leak.

Engine wont start without priming with gas first, then runs well

i have the same problem on a 98 jimmy 4.3 4x4.
i replaced the fule pump and have good pressure.
new wiers & coil (good spark) no MIL & no codes.
will only start when primed. it will run & drive all day
with no problems.
but once it has been turned off (warm or cold) i will
have to prime it once again to start it.
i have another engine that was in it before it spun a bearing.
it ran fine so i know all parts are good.
i swaped the mass air flow and throttle body but i still have
to prime it everytime to start it. am i forgetting something?
should i swap out the intake with the injectors?
any help would be sweet. thanks.

Losing power to fuel shutoff relay

The power for the shutoff relay actually comes from a secondary winding on the ignition coil itself. Why the enging would shut the fuel pump off is that as the engine ran for a while the coil gets warm and then breaks down or opens up the circuit for the fuel shutoff relay. Fixed by replacing $85.00 coil.
