Why did you change the starter , do not just change parts until you know what is wrong it cost to much to guess, #1 are you getting fuel , that is the number one ck first , what year is your truck ? . I am going to assume it is a newer model 95 and up , you say it felt like it was going into neutral , I do not think that was the case , I think you have a bad fuel pump, or maybe a broken timing belt , does it crank over , without knowing what you have I am just guessing , I need make model motor year , that would help me to maybe pinpoint your problem , try the fuel pressure first , if it cranks over , take a little bit ot ether an spray it into the intake , just open the air filter box do not take anything off and spray a spritz into the air intake ,and see if it starts if so it is prob your fuel pump and I mean a sprits be carful and let me know how you make out ,

Does it wind over faster than normal? Did it cut out on top of hill? Has it got a cam belt? If yes to all 3 its prob a broken cam belt.

Stalls while driving but restarts while coasting in neutral. Just bought the car and drove fine first 100 miles. Car had set up for long period before I got it. Any idea what's causing this?

bad gas, clogged fuel filter, weak fuel pump, vacuum leak, crank sensor, ignition control module, coil pack going south, the list goes on and on...
scan for check engine codes to see if the computer caught the fault.

What is the typical mileage per tank? Does anyone know? How can I improve the miles

car is 24mpg, city.
so 15.6 MPG sucks it does. but is possible if you let my 15yo kid drive car, it is easy, to do, fast right and heavy foot, for sure.

is that averaging 3 tanks, as that prevents ISLAND pump shut off
issues. (varies)
did you check miles with GPS, to see if your speedo/odommeter is a bit nuts?

here are the basics, i can list 100 things, but here are a few.
  1. measured wrong. not 3 times avg. (use same gas station and pump) use GPS for true miles. (then switch stations and repeat)
  2. bad driving, (teenager? in house?)
  3. stolen fuel?
  4. brakes dragging.?
  5. running 15psi in tires,? (oh'bummer said it ,!)
  6. engine running bad, driving with the CEL lamp glowing? DTCs stored, scan the PCM> look see.? fix.
  7. never ever tuned it UP, this decade?
  8. Pulling a heavy load.?
  9. measured only on the up hill run in the rocky mountains, (i just did that)
  10. transmissions slips or TCC lockup failing. (scan the PCM)
  11. not coasting down hills( cuts fuel 100%) see #2
  12. old fuel?
  13. ill stop.

Car stalled while driving and now check engine light is on

Most likely was seizing up because of lack of oil. Not gas.

Take it to a reputable trans shop. These transmissions are controlled by a computer. If this is a 2500 or 3500 Yukon, I bet it is equipped with the 4L80E transmission. These have a tendency to allow transmission fluid into the large electrical connector, and it shorts out wires and can make things go crazy. There is a way to silicone the leak and fix it(videos on YouTube) or a good honest shop can do it without replacing parts.

I recently purchase a 1986 Chevy S10 4x4 pickup with 91,000 miles. It runs great, shifts great (automatic), and everything works fine. However, there is a soft humming sound that increases in pitch with...

You may be listening to a slightly noisy differential or the Tyre's....If they are off roader's they sometimes buzz....To check the diff keep it in gear and give normal gas when descending a hill and then, with the vehicle in gear lift your foot from the gas pedal....If the noise increases to any notable degree, its the diff....You can carry out the same test by disconnecting each of the shafts in turn and repeat the test....When testing the front diff, don't forget to engage the 4X4 drive or you wont go anywhere....You've said the sound is not high in volume, I'd think you can leave it...As an after thought have you checked the oil in the transfer case? Its not the same as the gear box and has a separate filler?.

Smoking auto tranny

I had a similar problem with my ford 1/2 ton pulling a trailer on a grade against the wind on hot day. thought I completely fried the tranny. Let it cool off, continued the trip and drove the truck for years with no more problems. Can't explain how your dip stick was dry however. The dipstick should have been wet with foamed trans oil.

Car will not turn over, gas pedal seems loose, no pump feel

Check to see if it has spark, fuel. Your car is notorius for shorting out in the starting selenoid, get a new starter if you have fuel and spark and this will fix the problem.

Car slows to nothing

It's possible (= probably not) that the catalytic convertor has failed and debris is randomly clogging the muffler.

The next time it occurs, leave it idling and listen at the tailpipe of the exhaust system.
If you hear a pronounced hiss instead of the throbbing of the engine, the exhaust system is at fault.
