Check the fluid level in the transmission. To do this, from under the car remove the fill hole on the one side. Transmission oil should just trickle out the fill hole when properly filled.

If it's low or you're uncertain what's in there and want to make sure the correct fluid is present, you'll need a bottle pump. Mazda calls for 75w90 GL4 and 2 quarts are need for a complete fluid change. Not a bad idea if you don't know when it was last done.

How do you check the manual transmission oil level in a 1999 Mazda Miata?

In addition to this site I have heard that you can remove the shifter boot and plate for easier access to the fill hole.

1999 mazda miata check engine light comes on for a while then goes off on its own. what could this be?

The CEL is an overall warning that something is not quite right. The ECU has received a signal that some aspect of the engine operation went outside normal parameters. Do a check on engine oil and transmission fluid levels. Make sure that the air ducting and vacuum lines to the inlet manifold are all good and leak free. If there is something obvious then fix it. If everything appears OK but you are still worried have a garage read the On Board Diagnostics and see what temporary error was logged.

Steering makes noise and is leaking around reservoir

Steering noise probably comes from low fluid level. replenish fluid level, and take it to a shop ASAP, in order to save the steering pump and steering rack assembly. If the leak is due to a broken line, then it is a simple repair, but if the fluid is returning to the reservoir due to excessively high pressure, then a more detailed inspection is required.

I pulled the wrong pin on a friends 2002 Mazda Miata 6 speed (to drain transmission fluid). Accidently pulled the gear pin for the right hand side gears (5th, 6th, and reverse). We can't find how to...

you will need to take the trans out and maybe get it back by looking through the shifer hole...maybe. I would take it to mazda ( or a shop that works on a lot of Miatas) and hope they can do it easily. . The drain is on the bottom, how did that get confused?

When I first start my 1995 Mazda Protege, it will not go into gear unless you let the car warm up for at least 10 minutes or longer

If you have an automatic transmission, check the transmission fluid level. If the fluid level is low, the transmission will not engage.

If you have a manual transmission, check the clutch fluid level. Look for a leaky master cylinder or slave cylinder.

Mazda Miata 2002 Check Engine Light

Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light to tell you that there is a problem and you will need to have the car diagnosed and repaired. Most of the time this is not fluid level related. Take it to a service center you trust and they can tell you what the solution is.
