Ford P1298 code

This is a Code for a IDM failure. It can mean the loss of a signal through a bad connection or the failure of the part.

The part can be looked up at major autoparts sites. There are 2 colors which are meant to distinguish the different in construction. One uses an external resistor in the wiring harness and the other has internal computers to do the same job. They are not suppose to interchange.

The Ford Parts manuals are not accurate. Use aftermarket references at this point for the proper part. You can fit the wrong part and it may work for awhile, but it has an operational range and under some conditions can intermittently fail and then work again when back in the operational range.

This Code also has been related to a failure in the wiring to the rear license plate or tail lights. What happens is a short in the trunk wiring by the trunklid hinges backfeeds power to the PCM in the engine. An article in Sparky's repair site under a Code1298 search reveals this happening in an Escort.

I would check for the Color code, (either black or grey) to check if a resistor is in the wiring loom. Then a simple Ohmmeter test for continuity would show whether the resistor is out.

This Code has been unusual, because most relate to 1 defect. This 1298 shows up as a Code for several defects within Ford products and
different Manufacturers. Normally this does not happen because it defeats the purpose of a Code indicating 1 specific bad part.

Check the car front to back. Look up the photos of the part online. Perhaps go to a Salvage yard for a wire harness and check continuity to see if it is intact and if the original has a resistor in the harness or not to match it up.

Hi there bought a fiat punto 1.2 8v w reg for my son , it was not running right the 2 center pots was not fire,n so i have changed the plugs and the leads also the coil pack and theres stil no currant to...

Hi, hope by now you have solved your problem, but if not...
Firstly, the non spark on 2 and 3 makes sense, (presuming your car has a single coilpack, not four), as the pack fires in pairs, not individually, (one spark being so called "wasted")
Presuming that you haven't obtained a faulty coilpack( it has happened) the next step is to check the plug feeding the coilpack very carefully.
Two reasons for this are 1 wiring is getting thinner each year (costs), and these connectors can fail, and 2 the next step can be costly.
The coilpack is triggered usually by two outputs on the ECU, (one for each pair of coils in the pack) if one output failed it will affect two cylinders, usually 1 and 4, or 2 and 3, (see where im going?).
Ok, so here's the painfull bit, to diagnose the problem specifically, u will have to take it to a proper technition with the correct gear (not a bloke with a halfords scanner) that will cost, if it IS a faulty ECU, that will be more costly.
An ECU is usually paired with the car immobiliser and is specific to that one car, so you cant use one from a scrapyard without changing the ignition, key and immobiliser sensors, but they are repairable, not cheap, but definitly repairable.
Like I said at the beginning, i hope you dont need this and your repair was easy and cheap, but if its of any help, you're welcome, H

Wire color abbreviations Isuzu Rodeo

LB - Light Blue
V - Violet
GR - Grey
LG - Light Green
BR - Brown
L - Blue
Y - Yellow
O - Orange
G - Green
R - Red

Some wires will be allocated 2 colors ie B/W. This is a color with a different color line running along its length.
The first denotes the main color (Black in our example) and the second denotes the tracer line (White in our example)

Where are the ignition coil packs and how do I remove them?

The coil packs sit on top the the engine. As you open the hood toward the rear of the engine you will see four cokl packs sitting on the engine. There are 3 10mm bolts holding the bracket that holds all the coil packs. You can remove them all at once (easier) or try to remove coil packs one at a time.

I own a Mitsubishi Shogun Pinin- 2002 1.8 MPi Animal 3d Auto and I need a front oxygen sensor but I dont know the part number or what brand I can buy - the dealership is very expensive

Mitsubishi, by experience seem to run fine on universal lambda sensors.

If your wire colours are:

2 Blacks, 1 Blue & 1 White
or
2 White, 1 Grey & 1 Black

Then it will be standard Zirconia. Just buy a 4 wire uni- zircona sensor.

If you are UK the part number is 86400

The wires should be grey, orange and black, purple, and a black wire. The purple goes to purple, grey to gray. The orange and black goes to the small black wire on your car harness and the black goes to the bigger black.
