My father's 1987 Toyota Cressida won't start when the weather is hot. Otherwise it works.

When I get a problem like that, I usually start with replacing the fuel filter and checking the fuel pump pressure. But most of the time, it ends up being a crack in the plastic coil or distributor cap that is wider when it is hot than when it is cold.

I have a toyota cressida gli 6 1989 ,has spark and fuel, motor swings but just wont start

Where had you checked spark first? Is the distributor turning? This can be checked by removing the distributor cap and making sure the shaft is turning as the engine cranks. Have you checked that there is spark at the plugs? The ignition coil could be weak and still produce some spark but not enough to start the engine. Be cautious of all rotating belts and pulleys around the engine while working under the hood.

I can't get the the timing to go below 15 deg. Retarded distributor all the way and still reads 15-18 deg advanced. shorted T and E1 befor and after , no change.

Hi! You may want to replace the distributor coil and distributor cap. They may be worn thats why you can't get the timing right. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

My 87 Cressida won't start.....

Suggestion:-
Check battery will supply power to headlights etc. - if not:-

Check your battery terminal connections - these may be dirty/corroded - in cleaning you may have disturbed the terminal posts and caused a high resistance joint.
Check battery to chassis ground connection.
