How do I set the timing on a 1995 caprise with the 4.3 v8? it has the opti spark distributor. someone took it apart so im not sure how to set any of the timing

I need to know how the timing gear MARKS NEED TO SET AND THEN WHICH NOTCH THE DISTRIBUTOR SETS IN AND IN WHAT POSITION

How to install distributor cap on 1995 Caprice 4.3l v8


Is this opti spark? The distributor cap is on front side of engine? If the picture I looked at in manual is correct, the two large holes in cap goes toward the bottom. The coil tower is toward the top. Of the course the mounting screw holes have to line up. I found the picture in online partsbook.

What type engine? I assume if it is opti-spark it is a v8. L type .Check the routing of wires. GM vehicles are very susceptible to cross fire . Opti-spark distributors are notorious for failure as timing is achieved by a laser eye reading slots of a rotating disk and sending that data to the pcm. It was GM biggest failure. Check the installation especially the cap. Voltage will fluctuate anytime and engine's timing or firing if not on point.

Sounds like your timing is off when you placed the distributor back in or your spark plug wires are crossed. Start with the simple and check the spark plug wire firing order. 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Cylinder numbers drivers side 1-3-5-7 radiator to firewall. Cylinder numbers passenger side 2-4-6-8 radiator to firewall. Distributor cap #1 is at 5 O'clock and rotates clock wise. Once that is establish to be good then make sure the cylinder 1 is at TDC with the distributor rotor at the #1 position. Good luck and hope it's a crossed firing order.

It wolnt start and it is acting like it is 180 out on the timing but i cant find a distrubitor


the distributor is located behind the bottom crank pulley. It is actually called opti-spark ignition. you must remove the water pump and in some cases the crankshaft pulley to pull the distributor. These go out often and 9 times out of 10 it has failed due to a leaky water pump. the water pump "weep hole" is directly above the opti and causes them to pop and backfire etc...hope this helps.

You must be talking about the distributor cap on a opti-spark ignition. You have to remove the water-pump to remove the cap and rotor, it is driven of the end of the camshaft. Is there some info you need on this or just for me to agree with you, if yes to the second ,...... Yes, I think this is one of the dumbest ideas GM has ever come up with!!!!!!

My car want start seams like its out of timing


You need to check quite a few things to diagnose this. First is it getting spark? To check this, spray starting fluid in the intake while someone turns the car over (be careful don't spray too much) If it starts your not getting fuel (fuel filter, Fuel pump) If it doesn't start your not getting spark (Cap, rotor, coil) Hope this helps.

95 FIREBIRD 5.7 LITER


I have seen on manyengines that using high performance plugs can cause problems like your's. If you used split-fire's or platinum 4 plugs change them back to OEM sytle plugs and your problem should be solved. If you used OEM plugs check that none are loose or cross threaded as this can cause a loss of compression.

Let me know what type of plugs you iinstalled and I can try to assit further.
