More then likely its the Canister Purge Solenoid. you can find it online at the part number is PV140. And to replace it on blazer you have to remove the spare tire. Alot of people don't know where this part is so I hope this helps you and good luck.

SOURCE: i have 2000 chevy impala 3.4 engine i have check

This indicates a fuel vapor leak in the EVAP control system. It means a very small leak has been detected. In fact, the leak can be from a hole as small as 0.04" in diameter. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.
code P0442 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:

  • A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
  • A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
  • A small leak/hole in a fuel vapor hose/tube
  • Other small leak in EVAP system
  • Faulty vent o-ring seal
With a P0442, the most common repair is to:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Otherwise, replace the gas cap, or
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses

What does code 440 mean on a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu

P0440 - is a large EVAP leak. The EVAP system stores fuel vapor from the fuel tank and then delivers it into the engine under certain condition. The EVAP system basically consists of a purge solenoid, vent solenoid, charcoal canister, fuel tank and a fuel tank pressure sensor.

There are two common causes for this code. One is the fuel cap, make sure it is tight. Also check the filler knock where the gas caps seals to see if there is an excessive amount of rust build up which can also cause this code.

The other is the vent solenoid. If it sticks open the system will not be able to go into a vacuum mode. The vent solenoid is usually tucked up in the quarter panel on the drivers side right behind the tire.

A scan can tool is usually needed to monitor data and activate solenoids.

Why is engine light on ?

The 506, 171, and 1582 codes could be due to carbon buildup in the throttle body. Use throttle body cleaner to remove the carbon build up and retset codes. The 0440 code is the evap system code. This is usually a loose or worn out fuel cap.

I just had my oil changed and put 4 new tires on my1999 Buick Regal at Walmart, my service engine light was not on before they took care of these services, but is directly after. I went to Advance Auto and...

P0440 Evaporative Emission Control System Malfunction, could be just a coincidence, I have seen it happen, and the mechanic always get the blame, if the oil plug fell out, then I would blame them. It could just be a hose off or something minor that was overlooked, like the gas cap not tight enough. Look up the code here and see what it says, Hope this helps.

I have A 1998 toyota camry also, my check engine light was on also, took it to my freinds shop, found that it was the oxygen sensor mid way back my exhaust system causing my problem ,not the oxygen sensor to the front of the motor.

I have a 2001 grand marquis...and the engine light is staying runs great.I took it to auto zone to get it tested and he looked at the code and said it has something to do with my gas.It has been on...

Try getting gas
tighten the cap till it clicks
Take it to auto zone, have him clear the error codes
And see if it comes back.
A common code for all cars is vacume loss in the fuel system, or loose gas cap.
Try it.

You ECM has detected an issue with the engine and or transmission performance. You can take it to Auto Zone and have them scan the car for the DTC codes and they can advise you on how to address the issue. Auto Zone scan free of charge and if there are any issues, Auto Zone can give you the step by step instructions to getting the job done with common tools. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to answer any questions you may have with the DTC codes Auto Zone will give you.
