Oil pump might be going bad or the screen needs replacing

Testimonial: "no i checked it the shop didnt put any seal around the plug hole thats why leaking but the rattling noise is only when its in gear in nutral it doesnt do it i was thinking it could be a rear main bearing in the block but noise sounds like marbles in a coke can"

Rattling noise coming from oil pan checked all areas with a stethoscope, seams to be loudest here any ideas?


Clacking or rattling from that area could be due to a connecting rod knock, or the oil pan could just be acting as an amplifier for a sound coming from somewhere else in the engine.

take the transmision cover plate off the bottom and check your flexplate for cracks or loose bolts between the flex plate and the torque converter..also chheck your motor mounts.. you may have a broken mount allowing the fan to rub on the shroud..

That looks like a 2.7 liter. Is there oil in it? The first thing I would do is remove the serpentine belt and make sure the noise is coming from the engine and not an accessory. If the noise goes away with the belt removed than spin the pulleys by hand to see which one is making the noise. If the noise is the same with the belt removed than...... These engines have an issue with the oil pickup tube being to close to the bottom of the oil pan. Over time, sooner with less than normal service, the oil will start to sludge and this accumulates on the bottom of the pan. Eventually this will block the pickup tube and starve the engine of oil. Your best bet is to find a good used engine with low miles from a reputable source.

Hello....The first thing that you want to check..since you said the leak is in front is the area around the bottom of the crank shaft..If the oil is comming from there...This is where the main oil seal is for the crank shaft bearing...If no oil is comming from that area...you can breath a sigh of relief...There are a lot of stop leak products for everything from radiators to oil systems to transmissions...I'm not a big fan beacuse ...If it can stop a leak...it can stop the flow....The best cure for an oil pan leak is to drain the oil.....Drop the oil pan...replace the gasket...and if you do it right...you'll be good to go for a long time...PS.....don't forget to replace the oil....I hope this was helpful.....PEACE.....

If it is a 'squealing' noise it's probably the alternator/power steering drive belt. Before you turn on the engine in the morning, lightlt smear or spray some oil on the inside of the drive belt to lubricate it. If the squealing stops/disappears, then that's the fault ..

That squealing noise can be caused by an incorrectly tensioned belt, or a worn belt. Replacement is the only option.

The other frightening sounds can best be described as 'rattles' or 'tapping'. When a car stands overnight all the oil drains back into the sump (oil/pan).

There are two things (usually) that can be cause the rattle/tap:
1. Because the oil hasn't been pumped around the system, at start up worn big end bearings can rattle and tap on the crankshaft until the oil 'fills the gaps'. The tapping/rattling goes away as the engine warms and oil is pumped around the lubricating system.

A 'bottom end tapping' is a symptom of worn big ends (they are bearings at the bottom of the piston and fit around the crankshaft).

2. A rattle/tapping from the top of the engine can either be a worn camshaft or 'lazy tappets'. Again, when the engine warms and oil gets to the camshaft and tappets (also called 'hydraulic lifters) the noise will disappear.

If your car has this rattling/tapping noise - identify whether it is coming from just under the rocker box (ie the camshaft/tappets..) or the bottom end of the engine (big end bearings).

If the noise is coming from the top of the engine, try an oil change with a can of thick 'additive' included. A lazy tappet (lifter) isn't too much to worry about. A worn camshaft will affect the performance of the engine, though continue to do its job. An oil change with an additive included may help in quitening things down.

A bottom end tap/rattle (or 'knock') - the sooner that is sorted out the better.

Not sure i am locating the oil drain plug or the auto trans drain plug on my 2006 chevy silverado 1500. i am almost certain it is the oil drain plug but want to make absolute certain before i drain it....


Transmissions are drained by removing the pan itself. A new filter is to be installed upon draining. That is why there is no drain pan plug. The Chevy Powerglides were the last American made car with a drain plug in the 1965

04 murano right side engine rattle


Hello windy....There are a few thing on the murano that could cause this... one is the exhaust gussets that go to the bottom of the oil pan to the exhaust, they can crack and cause a rattling noise. Also I have seen the rear exhaust heat shield spot welds come loose and cause a rattling noise, from exhaust manifold down pipe on the cat. converter. I would check them first, also the park brake cable will lose tension and rattle on the undercarriage.
A more serious problem would be the timing chain and/or chain tensioners...these are known to make noise around 50-60k. The tensioners are operated from oil pressure, the face gets worn, the chain stretches and it results in a rattle or a slapping noise
Useing a full synthetic oil with regular maintaince will help prevent premature wear.
