How do I test the starter solenoid? The 30A fuse pops as soon as input it in. Even with the key off. I'm stumped. Help!

Disconect the starter from the car, take a time to check for a solenoid jam, if not troubleshoot with a multmeter to isolate the problem. It might be a defective starter coil.

sounds to me that you have an igniton problem not a starter problem and or if you have or had an alarm system could be cause if u do give me feedback and i will explain but seems that your starter is fine from what u say but if you think in terms of the elemts to start a vehicle batery gives pwoer to ignition which sends to starter which gives spark etc i would check you ignition system something is causeing a short and not alowing starter to function

The problem is either the starter solinoid (located on fender near battery) or you are not getting power to the "s" terminal on the starter solinoid from the ignition switch. If you follow the positive battery cable from the battery you'll follow it to the solinoid. Remove the small wire from the terminal marked "s" on the solinoid and using a screwdriver jump from "s" terminal (not the wire) to where positive battery cable connects to solinoid. (with battery connected). If starter doesn't do anything the solinoid is bad. If starter cranks then you are not getting voltage from ignition switch through "s" terminal wire.

your barking up the wrong gum tree witht the starter motor ,you have an electrical supply problem on the battery terminal area with more than one wire connected or a dodgy earth cable from the engine to the chassis .i would be inclined to check and fit another earth cable from a good connection on the engine -(bell housing) and run it back to battery terminal to eliminate all posibilitys .before anything else ,make you own if you have to but only use copper cable .this is my last question for tonight ,have to go pick er indoors up from work now

There is usually a fuse between the wire that connects the battery and the starter. Follow the wire from the battery towards the starter and you should locate the fuse.

How can I tell if the fusible link from starter is bad on 1998 dodge ram 1500 5.9L? New starter, replaced 30A fuse under hood. Still won't start with key

That is a symptom of a bad programmable key. Do you have a spare you can try? Do you know for sure whether it is the programmable type or not? You may also have an ignition fuse in the cabin section (under or on side of dashboard). Once you have definitely eliminated all key and fuse issues, you can use a multimeter (or simple 12 volt test light) to check for voltage. You need to confirm there is 12 volts coming through the large positive battery cable to the starter. If there is no voltage testing from the large positive cable, then either the cable is bad or (more likely) there is no "ground" to the starter; (if so, look for a broken "ground strap" from the car frame to the motor). Then confirm there is 12 volts coming to the starter solenoid when you turn the key; (you'll need someone else to turn the key for you while you test the solenoid). The fuseable link will be somewhere in that line leading to the solenoid. If you get no voltage at the solenoid, then you need to trace backwards. However, if you show LESS than 12 volts at the solenoid, it cab be _either_ a bad fuseable link _or_ a bad solenoid. I'm not sure if your vehicle uses a solenoid _on_ the starter or if it is separate. If it is on the starter, then it should be new since you bought a new starter. But if you have a separate solenoid, then the odds are that the solenoid was the problem all along.

Note: For _detailed_ wiring issues, you probably need the correct manual for your vehicle.

Try having someone turn the key while you hit the starter with a hammer. The starter might be sticking.

My 1986 toyota cressida has a popping EFI fuse. Everytime I put in a new one it just pops as soon as the car turns over even once.

i have a 1986 toyota cressida and i have no power at the fuel pump all relays are good and efi fuse is good this one has me stumped have power at pump when cranking and no power once car dies out if anyone has some ideas that would be cool thanks branden

There are two fuse boxes. A baqttery junction box under the hood on the drivers side and one inside on drivers side. Good luck.

The car will not start. All the lights come on, dash, interior and head lights. The car will not turn over. It does not even try to turn over. I looked at the battery terminals and they looked very clean....

My sons car will not start. Its getting plenty of power but doesn't even click when the key is turned. Is it the starter or a more difficult fix?

Sounds like a bad or defective battery or starter solenoid (located by the battery). Try jumping it, but remove the jumper cables as soon as the other car starts or you will damage the altenator.90ranger_0.jpgStarter solenoid located on the fender well.

I turn the key and I hear a click from the engine compartment. This has happened before and I checked the relay fuse and it was okay but then it mysteriously started. This time I did the same thing and...

That would be your starter. More than likely the bushings went bad. The click is the gear from the starter popping out to crank the engine, but ther is not enough power to turn it. If it is a real hard click. Then it is probably starter. If it is very faint it could be a battery or solenoid problem. The solenoid is located attached to the starter. Since you have to remove starter to replace solenoid, I would take it to the parts store and have it tested so you know for sure before you buy unneeded parts

Where can I find the Starter fuse in a 1997 toyota camry , and about how much do they cost.

don't need the fuse, have your battery testes with any auto parts store for free (auto zone) making sure your battery still have the cranking amp to turn your starter over, if not than replace it; next, if the battery are good, your starter may be bad, solenoid which act like a switch to the starter motor usally burn out before the motor does, and you may need new starter, new will cost you 140 bucks or so, you can get a rebuilt one for about 75% of the cost new. ebay or junk yard might be even cheaper.

If you've applied 12VDC to the solenoid and it does nothing, not even click, then the solenoid is toast!

2005 dodge neon--while car is going up grade all of a sudden she went dead--no sputter just dead---nothing happens when key is turned--no clicks...using a ohm meter i found the under the hood 30amp starter...

It could be a bad starter.
And a dead short within the starter would cause the fuses to blow as you mentioned.

I would pull the starter off, and take it into a local parts store to be tested.
If it does pass, you have taken that part of the problem out of the equation, and can begin looking for other causes.
