You need a timing light.

Hook it up to you battery.
(It will flash like a strobe light.)

You will have a line on your harmonic balancer.

You will also have one on your engine block.

Loosen your distributor cap.

Point the light at the harmonic balancer.

When the light flashes you want those lines to meet up by either turning left or right on the distributor.
(Turn slowly)

Testimonial: "Brian hi the motor has been stripped I'm trying to put it together again but can seem to figure out the distributor timing I've set everything TDC however the mark on the pulley goes to tdc on piston no three????this is a 5cyl 2.5i vw je2 motor cant find much on the web feeling very ignorant right now don't know how to carry on. ignoring the mark on the pulley and working with the marks on the cam and flywheel i've lined up no. 1 TDC but don't seem to get the dist. and fuel to meet at firing point going mad"

this year has a distributor ,so just use a timing light ,or start engine and turn dist till it speeds up then back it a little and should be about right if it pinks then back it off a little more

On my 98 ford explorer the transmission will try to downshift into drive above 50 mph. If I push the button and get it into drive it will only stay in drive for a few minutes, then shift back into...

sorry cant answer this one ,no automatics here in spain ,but i would have a look at the solonoid thats on the gearbox thats operating the overdrive .Or trade it in for a nice VW or peugeot combi with 1.9 lt diesel and mega miles to the gallon ,a 5lt petrol gas guzler is not politicaly correct with our troops being blown up by rag heads now is it.

Vw camper ignition timing

If it is really a 1986 the spec is 5 degrees before top dead center at idle.
Much better (and easier) to set at 35 degrees BTDC at 3000 rpm.
