Question about 2004 Toyota RAV4

3 Answers

Vehicle is slow to start, after filling tank with fuel. What would cause this?

Car has 155,000 miles on it. Will crank normally but refuses fire, usually 30 seconds or so, then will fire a few times, release and try again, runs rough then smooths out.

Agreed, engine coolant sensor is giving ecu signal that the engine is warm yet it is cold. Have it replaced.

Have a look at the live data of the ECU, check the specs of the engine coolant sensor, it might be faulty, and tells the ECU the engine is very colt or to warm compared to the real engine temperature. If you don't have a live data reader or scanner, a dealer ship or auto sparky must be able to help you out.

SOURCE: rough running 86 4runner after e85 put in!

very likely the fuel injectors are damaged, replace them, the fuel pressure regulator and all rubber fuel lines, also pull the gas tank and replace the short rubber hose at the electric fuel pump, I know this is expensive but even a few miles of running would have wrecked havoc on the rubber components, that rubber debris will flow through the fuel system and will plug the injector's, E85 melts it and skin for that matter.

Sounds like you have an intermittant problem, check all your wirirng, then you can move on to ignition related coil reluctor wheel ( in side the distribitor electronic control module again inside the distribitor. It could also be a fuel system problem do you hear the fuel pump come on when you turn on the key, the fuel pump should cycle until it devlops adequate pressure ( usually 3 - 4 seconds)

SOURCE: Hi, my toyota has started skipping on # 2

Hi Calvin

It sounds like you are getting an ark off somewhere, Best way to visibly see would be to open the hood when dark and look for any sparks off the engine, you wont see them in daylight. if it was a fuel fault then all the cylinders would suffer so I would look at electrical first.

Lastly a dodgy crankshaft sensor or camshaft sensor could cause this also. I would recommend getting the car on a daignostic machine to get the error code, I think it will cost about $20-$30 if you have the engine fault code I can tell you exactly the fault.

Hope this helps, happy new year

Dan

Why my car will crank but wont start?

A crank no start concern is when your car has power to it, and when you try to start the car it will turn over but will not fire. There are two problems that are mostly associated with a crank no start concern. Starter is Bad.
If your starter has failed, you might get a crank no start concern. If you happen to be stranded somewhere, I would try to tap on the starter. This is an old trick used by those in the know, and sometimes it will work so you can get your vehicle to a repair facility. The reason for this is because when a starter fails, it usually binds up internally. Tapping on the starter will sometimes free the internal parts temporarily and allow you to crank and start the vehicle. If this doesn't work, you may have lost power to the starter and will have to have the vehicle towed.
Fuel Pump Failure.
Another common problem for a crank no start concern is a bad fuel pump. A fuel pump does exactly what it says, it pumps the fuel from the gas tank through the lines and to the motor. If your fuel pump is bad your car may just crank and crank, but won't start. Ironically a quick fix for this is the same as the starter. Try to tap on the fuel tank to get the car started. This may allow the vehicle to run on what's called false fuel for a while, or at least until you can get it to the repair facility. If this method fails, unfortunately it's time to get the vehicle towed.
Electrical Issues
These days most vehicles will have some form of security system in place. The most simple form of security often causes a lot of problems. If your electronic ignition switch has a security feature on it, it can fail and cause the vehicle not to start. Basically what happens, is the car thinks the wrong key is in the ignition and refuses to allow the vehicle to start. Really the only repair for something like this is to replace the entire ignition switch for faulty operation.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 4.3 V6 with MFI. Engine ran not start.

Well it could be numerous if things but you want suggestions...So here's mine..Your gas tank might be vapor locked...This is caused from over filling your gas tank with gas over the years..Its when the pressure in your gas tank becomes greater than your fuel pump. It wont start until the pressure in your gas tank becomes lower then you fuel pump...Sounds crazy...This got me once...I didn't understand it...A lot of people (including me) Go to the gas station and get that extra 50 cent after the gas nozzle clicks off...over time that extra gas will run down the vapor lines intended to burn fumes....Like when you fill a gas can to cut your grass...If you sake the gas can it builds pressure and bows up. But with time that pressure will go away...Well saying that...Your gas tank needs to vent to....So your car burns not only gas but fumes...If you keep over filling your car with the extra gas it cloggs up your vapor canister intended for fumes or vapors...The gas will will go into that canister and clogg up the charcoal that's inside it. (Breaks it down) then the vapors can't get to your carburetor where it supposed to burns it. So what happens is the pressure in the gas tank becomes greater than your fuel pump and then car won't start..Are you with me? Lol Its crazy..Putting a different gas cap can cause the same thing...Simple test...When you open your gas cap to get gas.. Do you heat air sucking in.. Yes you can hear it....A lot of times loosening the cap let's the pressure out and the car will start right up.....Thus might not be your problem but worth telling at the gas pumps to other people..... Just trying to help

Don't let the car run out of gas. Fill the tank and run until the tank is half empty. Again fill the tank.
By driving until you run out of gas, you are letting sediments/dirt collected in the bottom of the tank to enter the engine. Rather they will block the fuel filter. Then gas will not reach the engine.
Clean the gas filter and your car will run fine.
The same advice again. Don't drive until the tank becomes empty.

Fuel gauge is showing amout of fuel like backwards on gauge. vehicle has 1/2 tank of fuel but gauge is showing like in the 100mph speed gauge

I think that the fuel sending unit in the tank is broken or the wire from the unit is unhooked.to keep from running out of fuel. fill up the car and use the trip oddometer to calculate how many miles you can travel. that car has 12 to 15 gallon tank and should get 20 to 25 miles per galloni would think that start putting gas in about 250 to 300 miles. then reset trip odometer

Car started only after several cranks, was told fuel pump replacement, is it normal with 68,000 miles?

You probably have a submersable pump. If you have run the gas on below 1/4 tank for some time, you probably burned out the pump. Alway fill up 1/2 tank or more.

And with the mileage, it isn't unusual to replace the pump.

The display reads 14 mpg how can is be in proved?

You cannot rely on these mileage displays. To know for sure fill the fuel tank up and write down the mileage on the vehicle at that time. Drive the car until you have 1/4 fuel in the tank. Fill the tank and note the amount of fuel it took to fill it up. Divide the gallons necessary to fill it up into the miles driven since the last fill up. You now know the mpg the car got. Example: You drove 300 miles and the car used 16 gallons of fuel. 300 divided by 16 equals 18.75 mpg.

the fuel filter would be the first place i would go, especially if it has not been replaced recently. it can cause slow priming of the fuel pump, resulting in hard starting. in addition, if your truck has never been tuned up, a set of spark plugs could make the world of difference - i believe on your particular truck it is recommended to change them at least every 100,000 M. good luck!

The car will start and run good till it warms up and then it won't start. I have fire and fuel, the injectors are firing, the convertor is not stopped up,

DO YOU TOP OFF when you fuel up?

Few extra ounce of gasoline inside the EVAP system can cause hot restart problem.

EVAP system is design to slow vent out vapour only.

==

Locate the charcoal canister near the front bumper and remove the plastic hose.

Let the gasoline vapour vent out door for 3-5 hours (more if possible) and re-attach hose.

You any need a short burst of starting fluid to restart.

DO NOT OVER FILL or TOP OFF GAS TANK.

Please rate my answer if it works out for you.

Thanks
