SOURCE: parking brake cable snapped but brake is on. any

Under the dash, where the break release handle is, you'll see a lever where the release cable is/was attached to. Either push forward, or pull back this lever and it will release the parking break. BE CAREFUL the foot peddle for the parking break doesn't hit you in the face!
Mine broke on the 2nd of this month as well....

2005 parking brake stuck

The parking brake cable should be replaced but in the short term try getting under the truck and grabbing the cable casing and move them around to get the seized cable inside the cable casing to release keep working the cable until it releases if this doesn't work replace both cables.

Hello all, this happend to my 2002 taboe as well. There is a handle under the dash below the steering column. The handle is conected via a cable to the parking brake foot mechanism. This cable is known to break. This part is available online through numerous websites for roughly 17-25 dollars, ebay has it but it goes for roughly 35 dollars. It is very easy to install with a pair of pliers and a wrench. The cable is about a foot long and comes with the release lever already installed.

Releasing Parking Brake

adjust the park brake cable first (3 pedal clicks and brake should start to engage the rear wheels) then lube the park brake ratchet release parts (under the dash) with WD40, this should take care of the problem.

Handbrake does not always work at first attempt. if you pull the handbrake up and down a few times without the button pressed eventually it catches on the ratchet and works.

Check the return spring on the parking brake lever as wll as the gear teeth:
  1. Make sure the parking brake cable is free and is not frozen or sticking. Make sure the brake shoes are properly adjusted.
  2. Raise and safely support the rear wheels.
  3. Apply the parking brake while counting the number of notches. Check the desired parking brake stroke; it should be 7-9 notches.
  4. If adjustment is required, remove the adjusting nut cover and turn the adjusting nut located at the front of the parking brake cable.
  5. After adjustment, check there is no looseness between the adjusting nut and the parking brake lever, then tighten the locknut.
Do not adjust the parking brake too tight. If the number of notches is less than specification, the cable has been pulled too much and the automatic adjuster will fail or the brakes will drag.
  1. With the parking brake lever in the released position, turn the rear wheels to confirm that the rear brakes are not dragging.
  2. Lower the vehicle.
  3. Check that the parking brake holds the vehicle on an incline.
