From my experience there's a motor on the transfer case(C) that engages the 4wd --this is controlled by an electronic relay(B) mounted in the (approx.) rear well/behind door--- inside the vehicle which in turn is controlled by the god almighty computer(A) and what buttons you push. If A doesn't talk to B---C does not work ---A talks to B but B does not talk to C same result--If A talks to B and B talks to C but C does not work same results. If your handy with a meter you can check out some of this to see if power is getting to the motor on the transfer case-- Now do to various sensors on vehicle this may cause it not to function for safety reasons which at this time are unknown(mismatched tires--wrong size tires--etc --sensors on wheels --I know it sounds goofy but this stuff happens) --but you might be able to Advance Auto, Auto Zone or someone with a code reader/computer and check it out -- also you can try some Ford Forums and see if this has happened to anybody else--- some times it's something simple as in a corroded/broken wire--- there's a lot of issues going on with

deteriorating wire connections across the board amongst a lot of vehicles -- check to see if you can obtain a wiring diagram from Auto Zone---the best I can for now

SOURCE: 4x4 wont engage

There is a switch that has twwo wires going to it, it's located just above the motor on your transfer case,on the drivers side, one plug goes to the motor and the other goes to this switch, it's the motor that shifts it into low and high range, I'm not sure what the switch is called but it tells the front end when to lock and unlock.
Hope it helps

SOURCE: front tires wont engage in four wheel drive

if the actuateor is vacumed, you might have have a hose that came off or it has a split in it somewhere, check that.or if you have posilock hubs one or both may be wore out or lacking grease, they are easy to remove, just a hex wrench and snapring pliers is all you need, remove and inspect for obvious sighns of wear.

2005 F150 4x4 hubs not engaging

First, You said you DID NOT check for voltage at the solenoid connector...I think that would be a real good idea.

Did you check to see if the vacuum lines actually had vacuum? Did you check to see if vacuum was present at the solenoid? Does the solenoid "click" when changes are made to the 4X4 controls? Did you check for Did you check that the vacuum from the solenoid to the axle actuator was being applied to the actuator?

My 4 wheel drive will not engage, could it be a blown fuse?

Is the system ESOF ( Electronic Shift On the Fly ) or MSOF ( Mechanical Shift On the Fly ) ?

Operationally vacuum holds the IWE ( Integrated Wheel Ends ) out, and once vac is removed the spring engages the IWE.

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem.

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
Shut of the truck ( still jacked up, and supported ) remove the vac lines from the IWE. The spring should push the gears in, without the vac line on.
Check the vent line ( tube that is routed into the engine compartment with nothing attached to it ), for blockages.
If the vent line is clear, and with the vac lines off the IWE should be engaged ( both front wheels locked ).
If they lock, the problem is with the IWE solenoid not shutting off vacuum to the IWEs. There is a TSB on the 2004-2006 IWE solenoids, a newer revision has been made, and used from 2007 and newer MYs.

I had my 2005 ford f150 service.. new pads in all four and a new rear calliper. Now the 4x4 wont engage. I check all the fuses, relays and they are good. I got under the truck and tap the selenoid but...

What solenoid under the truck did you tap ?
There is a transfer case under the truck, and the IWE solenoid is in the engine compartment on the firewall.

Did the Vent an vacuum lines get reversed ?
