I have had continuous missing issues on my 1997 Silverado after i had a new engine installed 30,000 miles ago. Today I purchased a new gasket for the EGR Valve and removed it. The mechanic had re-used the old gasket when he replaced the engine and cut corners to save $2.00. I found he had installed the EGR bass-ackwards causing my check engine light to stay on and the engine always to miss. Engine runs GREAT now

Bent valves would be number one cause. Check the timing. If you lost time, your valves are tapping the pistons causing the knock. When the valves tap the pistons they bend and don't close all the way, so the cylinders cant make compression.

To rule out a bad valve do a compression test on all cylinders. Secondly, these Vortec engines fuel injection system work on a poppet valve system and if either fuel pressure, a clogged poppet valve stuck open or close the misfire code will come on i assume yours must be closed since you get a lean condition. This is my fix and and excellent one at that. Go to the Autozone website and type in all your truck info and go under fuel injection parts, you will find somewhere that there is a conversion kit made by a company called Sorensen, this kit converts the system from the troubled poppet valve to a true multi fuel injection unit, your engine will run much smoother and wont be prone to a sticking valve. Now the job itself is pretty big as u ned to remove upper and lower intakes. On my van with the vortec 5.0 i purschased the upper intake which is not to expensive and the bottom intake i just cleaned and made sure none of the EGR oassage ways were obstructed with carbon, they were! Make sure you mark the dsitributor as you would need a good scanner to re set timing if timing is moved, happened to me. Discinnect battery as well. If you have a pick up its much easier to work on than a van. By the way my MPG improved with this new upgrade. GM also knew they messed up with this system and they also offer an upgrade kit but its too expensive for me, this upgrade has been on my van 4 years no problem, good luck.
