There are 2 conditions that will trigger this SAFE MODE that the engine is running in. The first is transmission over temperature when the sensor in the transmission senses over-temp situation it reduces engine output to no more than 1500 rpm. The second is low oil level in the engine, which will also limit engine rpm to 1500. One of those sensors is bad or the wiring for one of them is damaged. This SAFE MODE is designed to protect the engine or transmission from further damage.

What's the difference between safe mode and limp mode in a 1999 GMC Yukon

  • sarahsue55 Dec 01, 2014

'Limp In' Mode=Safe Mode. The computer is always expecting certain signal values from certain sensors i.e. the temperature sensor, the speed sensor, the throttle position sensor or MAP sensor, etc. As long as these signals are what it would normally expect for the current operating conditions and are normal based on all the other signals it is receiving from other sensors, it acts normally and accordingly. If the computer, all of a sudden, receives some crazy signal from one of the sensors that is out of the normal range expected from this sensor, it is programmed to go into 'emergency' or 'secondary' measures. These emergency measures vary depending on the severity of the defective signal. All of this is preprogrammed into the computer's logic by the manufacturer. The manufacturer has decided that as long as a certain parameter of a particular signal is sent from a sensor to the computer, all is well. The manufacturer decided that if this signal is higher than their highest parameter or lower than their lowest parameter, something is wrong with that sensor and the computer should make someone aware of the situation and take action to try to 'save' the vehicle systems or powertrain. Unfortunately, a trip to a mechanic is likely needed at least to diagnose which sensor is on the fritz.

1999 yukon denali transmision will not go in reverase

The reaction sun shell inside the transmission has cracked. They pretty much all have that problem from 1996-1999. It is be repairable if cash is tight, but for an extra $500 on top of what you'd spend on the repair, you can get a new transmission.

My 1996 GMC Yukon 4x4 transmission will only drive in 1st and 2nd

It will take off from a stop in overdrive but as soon as it shifts into 3rd at about 30 miles per hour it jumps into neutral? If yes, you have a burnt 3/4 clutch. The transmission will need rebulit. Cost of about 1600 dollars.
