Revs high on idle runs ok but smell fuel will shut off when idling after 2 or 3 minutes

Sounds like a fuel pressure/fuel return malfunction. Go to A d.i.y page on line and should be an easy diagnostic, especialy if ur getting a malfunction indicate light....check engine light.

Are you sure your idle ports ( size of pinhole) in carb aren't plugged with something? What happens if it starts to die, and you give it a quick squirt of WD-40 , down throat of carb?

check your Throttle Positioning sensor that should fix your rough idle the TPS controls the breather on the front of the engine its affixed to the right hand side of the throttle body just infront of the spyder on the V6 Vortec 4.3L Models

Try checking your Spark plugs (they MUST be the right type, clean, and properly adjusted: and try adjusting your timing. Either or both of these could cause this type of problem Hope it helps. If so, don't forget to rate the answer, will you?
