You can use Dexron 3 or go to a dealer and get the fluid.

Just universal rear end fluid will do the trick. There is no specific types of fluid for different types of vehicles

SOURCE: What kind of fluid do

If the vehicle has an Automatic Transmission: Dextron II

If the vehicle has a Manual Trans, its complicated.
Depending on Trans model:
The 77mm 5-speed and 89mm 4-speed overdrive use Dextron II ATF.
The 117mm 4-speed uses API GL5 SAE 80W90 gear lubricant.
GM recommends Synchromesh Trans Fluid (1052931) in both the 85mm 4-speed and 5-speed.
Hope this helps!

SOURCE: Ned to change the oil in transfer case

The Z71 typically comes with the auto 4wd transfer case (cannot remember the GM number). This requires AutoTrak II, which is available at a GM dealer. Do not use any other fluid in this transfer case! The previous post was correct in the location of the two plugs, but not on the fluid (the other types of transfer cases by GM use ATF). The transfer case is located under the truck right under the cab. There is a small skid plate under it, and a large driveshaft leaves the rear end of the case heading to the rear differential (axle). If you have the manual or electronic w/o auto 4WD transfer case, you can use Dexron III, but Dexron VI is a better fluid that is also now available at your local auto parts store. Again, if you have the AUTO 4WD button in the dash, use the AutoTrak II fluid from the dealer.

You can use the same ATF as the transmission or a synthetic ATF for GM Transmission. Most guys will use normal ATF and mix Lucas ATF transmission additive to it, to make the fluid last longer. Good luck and hope this helps. There was two types of transfer case available to your truck. NP205 takes 5.1 pints NP208 takes 10.0 pints

SOURCE: what type of fluid goes in the transfer case on a

The correct fluid for your transfer is dextron/mercon transmission fluid. To check the fluid level, jack up both ends of the vehicle and be sure to support with jack stands.Make sure vehicle is level. If you look at the rear of the transfer case, you will see two plugs, one lower than the other.Remove the lower plug and if fluid runs out it was overfilled,if nothing runs out, stick your pinky finger in the hole and feel for the fluid level. If it needs fluid, remove upper plug and pour in fluid until it runs out the bottom hole. Then replace plugs and lower vehicle

well there are a few options, depending on the wear of your transfercase you can just replace the rear housing and install new pump clips from gm, jb weld and other bonding agents will not fix the problem but rather prolong it, I just pick up a reman this week for my own truck that was only$1100 great deal compared to junkyards

Type and capacity of fluids

The kind of fluid needed is called GLS this is not something you can get at some grease and go. To my knowledge this particular fluid is still a dealer only item. DO NOT put ATF in your transfer case. I don't remember the capacity but the dealership would have this information.

Got in truck wouldnt go into 4wd said service 4wd shut truck off then everything worked fine

Has it been some time since 4X4 was engaged? Have you had the fluid changed in the tranfer case? it should be done at 60,000 miles, worn out lubricant can cause these kinds of problems with transfer cases.
