Question about 1990 Geo Storm

2 Answers

What will make the #1 and #2 spark plugs to foul out? Parts that are new:Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, pickup coil.Cleaned the intake with Sea-Foam, that's what made it run better, but only #1 and #2 plugs that are fouling with dry carbon., and the compression is 160 in all 4 cylinders.I haven't changed the fuel filter, and I notice that there was a crack in the exhaust manifold in the area of those two cylinders, don't know if that would foul them out.

I would go for the fuel injectors. Dry carbon, being black(to much fuel) or white (to little fuel). Both lean to the injectors. Clogged or open. My guess would be black. The crack would really only cause a O2 sensor fault, sucking air, that could cause a white burn on the plugs, to lean. Have the codes read..

Testimonial: "yes,#1 and #2 has a tiny amount of white, but both are covered in black dry carbon., plugs #3 and #4 are fine."

Why not post engine type.
1990 is really a Isuzu Impulse
Guess1:
and with a 1.6L 4XE1 (isuzu engine it is)!!
SOHC engine (single cam)
and what Fuel and spark systems, (we need this to THINK, cause)
12valve
did you try the jumper codes yet.
http://www.robietherobot.com/storm/stormFAQ.htm

do not ignore the cam belt or boom , end of road, and bent valves.
Multipoint EFI

id say 2 leaking injectors, get them pro cleaned,(off car)
untra sound back flushed.

next is spark but not really spark is always first , after bad engine.
compression good so , spark.
so what spark is there.
you did a tune up!~great. are the spark plug wires reversed? at 1 and 2.
did you check spark timing carefully, or just guess?
is this some cheap china no name rotor that fits on 3 ways.?
and if wrong makes spark (CMP) right but lands in the wrong post in cap? rotor error......
use BOSCH rotor, or NGK,? bam good.
my guess , is spark, is good, but i use tools to prove that. not guess.
if true then its pure fueling issues on only 2 injectors
and if true the solutions are only 2.
get them cleaned
or buy refurbs. (can be less than $21 clean x4)
clean all 4, no just 2.

these injectors have 10 micron screens inside,
and need to be clean,. and the car is old, what makes you think
any old 24year old injector can work right>?
i send mine here,

My checck engine light is blinking it came on 2 months ago i was told i neede a map sensor or cat convertor light is now blinking and car has hessitation

buy a can of sea foam motor treatment at a auto parts store pour it in the gas tank with at least a half tank of gas disconnect the negative battery terminal for about 15 seconds reconnect, than start car and drive it should solve problem with hesitation if the problem comes back check for a bad injector are fouled spark plug, you should put sea foam or other brands of injector cleaner fuel conditioner in your gas every other fill up ethanol gas fouls plugs and causes injectors to clog because of the carbon that it forms on your pistons valves and intake runners, sea foam will cure this problem

What would cause no fire from the coil to the intake-side set of plugs?

The actual ignition module is the only thing that you have not replaced. That is where the problem is. You can have voltage but not ignition when there is a problem.

Toyota pickup 94 model cant get spark plugs 2 fire replaced pickup coil igniter rotor buton wires cap coil fires plugs wont

I had to replace the magnetic pick-up sensor on the side of the distributor that tells the coil when to fire on my 86 truck. It was $80 and slips onto the distributor held on by the cap.

Why are my coils getting spark but not my plugs?

I assume you have one coil mounted on the intake manifold with a wire going to the center of the cap.
If you replaced the cap, rotor, and wires I can't think of anything that would keep the plugs from firing other than faulty plugs.
Have you checked for spark at the end of the plug wires ?
If the fuel system is dumping fuel into the cylinders, the plugs can become fuel fouled and not fire.
You may have some of the wires mixed up, a timing problem with the distributor, or not enough fuel to the injectors.

Installed new engine now wont fire from distributor to spark plugs.

If you've got spark from the coil but not at the spark plugs, it can only be 1 of 3 things.
  • Bad spark plugs or plugs not gapped properly.
  • Bad spark plug wires.
  • Bad distributor cap and rotor. This is pretty easy to check. Open up the cap and look at the points on the underside of the cap and also the point on the rotor. If they look corroded or worn, then you should replace them.

Good Luck!

Had a random misfire truck would not start have replaced all wires cap rotor not even 6 months ago plugs as well can you help . thanks

The first thing that i would do is check your cap and rotor for corrosion. look on the inside of the cap and see if there is corrosion on the tips where the rotor sends electricity to. check the tip of your rotor button for wear and corrosion on the tip of the rotor. If thats all good make sure wires are not bad by purchasing a spark tester at your local parts store. Its only a few bucks and you hook it on to the spark plug end of the wire and it will spark if the wire is good. If they are good then check and make sure plugs arent fouled out and make sure the gap between the electrode and the tip is correct. About .045 is usually the spec for them. then if that is all good i would consider replacing the coil because if the coil has a short in it, it could possibly cause a random misfire.

Turned off then wouldnt start ,took ignition apart cleaned up ,no spark to plugs cap, rotor ,wires good power to coil and module

If there is no spark to the plugs, but good cap, rotor and wires; then if the there is good power to coil and module, then the module or coil must be bad.

It sounds like you may have an intake valve stuck open. the main cause of this is carbon build up. then once you clean it it breaks free and a chunk sticks in the intake valves. other causes of this and check these first they are easier, are crossed ignition wires (ensure you have the correct firing order) Bad ignition wires (allowing the spark to "jump") water or condensation in the dist. cap. or incorrect ignition timing. and dont rule out a possible ECM failure.
