Align the front wheals to the straight a head position. Turn the steering wheel to full lock, note and mark steering wheel at 12 o'clock position ,turn to other lock and count turns, half the number of turns and turn steering wheel to that position , fit splines together.

I just had the power steering gear box changed in my 1994 Mighty Max. The steering wheel is now cocked to the left. What would be the cause and what would be the fix?

You missed a spline when installing the pitman arm on the steering box. Park the truck straight and remove the arm. with the arm off, unlock steering column and point the steering wheel straight. Lock the steering column. Then reinstall the pitman arm on the steering box carefully matching the splines in the arm to the shaft on the steering box. that should be close to running straight while driving straight.

IF you have a rack and pinion steering pull the steering shaft of the pinion splines and centre the wheels . Centre the wheel and put the steering shaft back on the splines. If it is master splined then centre the steering wheel and adjust each side tie rod until the wheels are centred . (one in -other out ). Remember that when the wheels are straight ahead then the steering wheel will be slightly to the left (USA) to compensate for the camber of the road.. IF a steering box pull the pitman arm off --centre the wheels and the steering wheel and refit the pitman arm

The stub shaft spline or the steering wheel shaft spline is stripped and needs to be replaced.
Sounds like someone had the wheel off and stripped the splines on removal/installation at one time.
You can try to improvise a key way slot system on the shaft but you have to be certain it is secure, this will save you a lot of time and money, unless the steering wheel is at fault then r&r the wheel and try to locate a used one when installing it be sure you line up the spline notches.

I looking for a power steering box for a '84 Chev S10. I want to know up to what year will interchange, so hopefully I can get one with lower mileage.

I have an '84 as well. As far as I know, those will interchange from '82-'93. Mechanically, very little changed in those years. They may also interchange with a few years of cars ('80's Monte Carlos for instance share brakes with S-10's I believe) As long as it bolts up, it will work fine for that.

I need to replace the rag joint at steering box of a 1976 Doge D100 truck. Can you give me any information on how to do it ?

first thing is to loosen the column mount at the fire wall inside where the column goes through the fire wall and also loosen the column support up next to the dash. so you can move the column up and down. at the rag joint remove the bolts that pass throught the leather dampner between the two pieces of metal one is clamped to the steering gear box shaft and the other is clamped to the steering column loosen the bolts that hold the pieces of the rag joint to the column and steering box. and remove each piece from the shafts. you may need a hammer depending on how rusty the are on the shafts. the steering gear box shaft is splined so when you install the new joint line up the splines so it will slip onto the shaft. a little WD40 sprayed on the shaft will help it slde on. then slide the column into the top part of the joint until it is seated. tighten the clamp nuts and torque to 40 ft Lbs each retighten the firewall clamp and the dash support and you are done.

Chevy g20 van steering driver replacement problem

Cannister is your steering box...arm is the pitman arm. check to see if there is a thick alignment spline on either the arm or box. This locates the arm in the correct position. If not center the steering wheel(turn all the way to one side and count turns all the way to other side and divide in half for example, three turns from one side to the other side = 1 1/2 turns to center) and put both front wheels straight ahead, then install arm onto box. It is far easier to put it back than it was to remove.

Hi, I'm trying to put a new flaming river steering shaft onto my 1984 CJ& with the power steering. The new shaft has a 3/4'' yoke and 36 spline count, but I cannot for the life of me get it to mount on the...

check the splines for consistency as many have a master spline ( one wider or like 2 as one) so that the steering wheel always ends up in the correct position
you may have to fit a different yoke to the box to take the new shaft

Power steering

First, you have to slide the black plastic cover up the steering shaft to get it out of your way. The steering shaft is attached to the steering box with a splined coupling that is held on with one 11mm bolt (the bolt goes right to left). After the bolt is removed, the shaft will slide off of the box (with some persuasion from a prybar). Next, you have to remove the 2 power steering lines from the top of the steering box. After that, you get under the truck and use a pickle fork to steparate the pitman arm from the center link. Lastly, you remove the 4 bolts that hold the steering box to the truck frame. They run through the frame from the driver's side and screw into the steering box. Then all you have to do is wrestle the box out without smashing a finger.
