  • Have the starting system tested (at the place where you bought the battery (dealership if it came with the vehicle) or by a trusted mechanic, automotive shop, or automotive parts store). A starting system test would not only test the battery but also the alternator. Make sure that a battery-drain test is also done.
  • The battery connection or battery cable(s) could have corrosion present that could make it more difficult for the battery to do its job. The connections at the battery & at the engine & other direct contact should be clean & tight.
  • There could be a drain on the battery or an issue with the charging system (which does not always mean the alternator or just the alternator).
  • The battery could be wearing out. If battery is less than five years old, then it is probably still under warranty & having it replaced from where you purchased it could save you more money.
  • The starter could be wearing out. A mechanic could remove it & have it tested. Oil can short out the electrical components that engage the starter motor.
  • The transmission could have an issue, but before having someone look into that, consider how close the vehicle is to its time for a tuneup (according to the owner's manual mileage guidelines). This could point to a tuneup item that was overlooked such as a PVC valve, sparkplug wires, or an air filter that should be changed.
  • Sometimes, this can occur when a weight/viscosity of oil that is higher/heavier than the manufacturer recommends is in use; & that could also reduce gas mileage.

Could be a faulty fuel pump, they are notorious for acting unpredictibly when they start to go bad. My bet is in a week it won't start at all. Try banging on the fuel tank the next time it won't start, if that fixes it it is prbably a fuel pump.

Running you fuel pump until its at E is hard/bad on your fuel pump since gasoline is the fuel pumps lubrication.

did you do a fuel pressure test? if you havent do it its cheep an at least you can elimanate that. if thats not an issue, then there is only two other things crank sensor, and if there is one cam sensor.

Backfire means timing is off and unburnt fuel mixture explodes either from compression or a hot exhaust system. Black smoke could mean the fuel mixture is too rich. A metering component is not functioning and sending wrong data correcting the air/fuel ratio.

Saturn ,now if iam correct this is a renamed opel astra for the american market ,now again if iam correct this is a 16v 4 cyl engine and again i think if iam correct the computer is bolted to the inlet manifold right hand side of the engine and if so this is the problem as here in europe the zafiro 7 seater and opel astra and the aussie version called a holden all suffer from the same fault ,I honestly that if this is the case then remove the computer from the manifold and pull it to one side as the wires are just about long enough ,leave the silly plastic engine cover off to help cooling and use a 12v computer fan from a power pack or whatever with a couple of plastic ties hold the computer to the brake pipes and strap the fan to the back of the computer and have the fan connected to a ignition supply in the fuse noard so it comes on with the ignition and see how it goes .You are not the person in the world to have this problem but all these engine have this problem regardless of the name of the car Please dont shoot the messenger as hemmingway once wrote ban guns is what i say

fuel pump bad or fuel pump relay bad. Likely fuel pump.

Spray some starting fluid in air intake and see if it starts. If yes, replace fuel pump in fuel tank. drop tank for access. About a $250 repair at shop. call around.

Onece in a while turn over wont fire. runs great other wise

your injector or fuel pump may be going out, next time when you check the issue, check your distubutor again and making sure you getting sparks, if you do have sparks than it has to be your fuel problems.
