It can be done, but not easily. A better question is why are you replacing the timing chain? If the gear or chain broke, it's possible to have done other internal damage. These engines are known for camshaft failure as well. Before buying parts, consider the cost of a used engine. If you are pulling it out anyway, you will be hours ahead by putting a different engine in.

I agree, it can be done in the car, but is much easier with the engine out !! Invest in a good repair manual, like a Haynes, that is specific to your car, and read the procedures for this project, then you can decide, having some knowledge about which way you would like to do the job ! Good Luck !!

You can do it in the car, but you'll find it 300% easier to do if you pull it out. You're back will thank you too.

SOURCE: 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix Thermostat

as you face the engine the thermostat bell is on the right (drivers side) Follow the radiatoe hose. Remove the two bolts and raise the bell still attatched to the hose. the thermostat is there with the rubber seal. You can gently pry the thermostat out with a screwdriver or something similar. Put in new thermostat be sure it is the same as the old one, and then replace or change the seal (be sure it is the smae size and thickness as the old one as I got the wrong size from Napa) Then replace the bell, and tighten, but not over tighten. I hope this helps!

Where is timing belt located on my 2002 Pontiac Grand Am

nowhere. it has a timing chain that should last forever as long as you keep your oil in good shape. doesn't matter if you have a 4 cylinder or a v6, they both use chains.

How do I change timing chain on 2002 Grand Am Gt 3400

Take it to your favorite local auto mechanic and have the engine checked out first. It is literally easier and about the same price to swap engines as it is to swap timing chains. Unless you are a mechanic with a shop with tools, or a glutton for punishment, I would not attempt this myself.

Pull the valve cover and see if the timing chain is broken. Pretty common with engines that have higher miles or less than ideal oil change intervals. If the chain is broken it bent valves. Your better off with a low mileage used engine

I have a 93 grand Jeep Cherokee Laradeo ,to change the oil pan seal , and or the oil filter housing to change the O rings , or the timing cover seal or the rear seal , dose one need too lift up or pull...

The oil filter housing and the timing cover can all be worked on with engine in car.
For the rear engine seal (rear main seal), the transfer case and transmission will have to be removed to access the seal.
Most of the time, the oil pan can be removed without raising the engine. Check your clearance under there for anything obstructing removal. (I loaned out my Jeep manual and never got it back!) On some cars, engine needs to be raised about 4 inches for pan to clear the oil pickup tube. Don't know about your Jeep.
