Rear seats are held in at two points. First, place your hands at the base of the seat about two inches off the mounting spot on the floor. Press down and toward the trunk at the same time to release the locking bar under the seat. Once you have released the seat from the locking bar, it should be easily removed. Replace the seat by reversing the removal directions.

SOURCE: trunk jammed, driver side latch wont' work, keys wont work

THERE MAY BE A ROD THAT GOES FROM THE KEY TO THE LATCH, IF THAT HAS DROPPED OFF ON ONE END YOU CAN TURN THE KEY ALL YOU LIKE BUT IT WILL NOT OPEN THE TRUNK.
UNDO THE BOLTS HOLDING THE LATCH IN PLACE AND OPEN THE TRUNK, IF THE TRUNK LID HAS LINING ON THE INSIDE IT WILL HAVE TO BE REMOVED TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE KEY AREA FOR INSPECTION AND REPAIR.
HOPE THIS HELPS

How to open trunk jeep Cherokee from inside

all cars , have child protection. for 20 years now.
read the operators guide. it's in the glove box , on door locks
the driver can block and prevent passengers in all rear areas from egress.
child proof.
they never knew you'd put up a barrier.
How would they, that is all custom modifications.

incase you lost it so soon, here it is for free.

http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/manuals/

on some cars its just master switch

excerpted from my op guide.
Child Protection Door Lock
The rear doors of your vehicle are equipped with child
protection locks. If you push up on the lever on the open
edge of the door it cannot be opened from the inside of
the vehicle. Push the lever down to disengage the child
protection locks.

in your manual read page 36, see photos there too.
page 38 , shows what to do if stuck inside.

all in the manual.

First thing i would try is looking at the fuses at the fuse box between the diver door and the dashboard. I was lucky enough mine was doing the same and it was just a blown fuse. Hope your problem is the same.
