I think it goes between the transmission casing and the chassis.

I have a 1992 lincoln town car and replaced alt and battery. on idle its at 14.4 and then soon as i accelerate to about 1500rpms lights dim and voltage drops to 12.2 and battery light comes on let off gas...

I would go back to the power and ground cables. First, you checked grounds and cleaned them. Do you have all the grounds in place. From the battery, you should have a ground from the battery to body, battery to the engine and from the engine to the body. Positive side should be from the battery to the alternator, battery to the starter and battery to the under hood fuse panel. Check these cables also. Since you 14 volts going to 12 volts, I would suspect a engine to body ground or corrosion at the fuse panel plugs/connectors.

My 1989 Town Car has a hard start problem and seems to be starved of power. Once started, it runs great, but lights are dimmer than they should be, wipers and turn signals are slow, and heat doesn't blow...

That's a tough one.. I think you may have been on the right track when you replaced the negative battery cable. The next thing I think you should suspect are the grounding straps located between your engine and the frame of the car. As an experiment, hook a jumper cable between the block of the engine and the frame of the car. Make sure you have good connections and THEN try starting it and see if you can tell any difference. Grounding is the most often neglected or overlooked aspect of electrical problems.

2000 Lincoln Town Car beneath body frame on drivers side a visible cable running horizonal to the frame is drooping. I don't know what this cable is or what clamp I might need to install to pick it up. ...

IF IT IS A LARGE ROUND CABLE, IT COULD BE FOR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE! IF IT IS A SMALL CABLE, IT COULD BE FOR THE TRUNK LID! EITHER WAY IT CAN BE EASILY REMOUNTED USING A SCREW IN CLIP, OR A PUSH IN CLIP IF THERE ARE EXISTING HOLES ON THE FRAME RAIL! YOU WILL BE ABLE TO LOCATE THE ARE FOR THIS UNDER THE CAR!

When I turn the key it only clicks, starter does not engage

It's either a bad battery (low on charge) or a loose ground wire. If you are SURE that the battery has 12 volts (yes, even a low battery will run your lights, radio, door ajar chime, etc., but won't have enough to start the car). If the battery is fully charged and your volt meter shows 14.4 volts (fully charged battery reading), then it's a ground wire. There are two locations. The negative battery cable itself on the battery, and the location on the frame or engine where the cable connects to.If these are ok, check the positive cable connection on the starter.

2003 lincoln town car.hit a big pothole and engine shut off.

With this type of electrical problem, as with many...The first thing you look for is a bad ground. Start with negative cable from battery. Follow it down to the frame. Make sure the connections are tight, clean, and undamaged. make sure you have a ground from: Bat to frame, bat to engine, engine to frame.Next, ck your Positive connection at the starter, as well as the solenoid (smaller wire) Take your multimeter and connect to your positive lead...watch for voltage drop while trying to crank.

Post back.....let us know
