Question about Cars & Trucks

1 Answer

I have a 94 ford ranger, 4 cylinder 8 spark plugs, 150 thousand on it, the vehicle has ran flawlessly until a week ago, the first sign was driving down the road it started skipping and had a huge loss of power, then suddenly the engine picked up and ran fine all the way home, the next day the problem started occuring more often, Checked the plugs, put in injector cleaner to no avail, next I started checking spark, the truck has two coil packs in line, I found the two rear plugs on the engine not firing, guessing a bad coil pack I swapped the coil packs out and it still ran the same, I put in a new relay and even tried a couple of others, still it kept dropping the same two cylinders at random intervals, then the problem became permanent and stayed this time, same two cylinders dead, please help,

Two plugs per cylinder? Just wondering why it has twice as many plugs as it does cylinders.

Anywho; have you tried fresh wires, or at least swapping them around?

Two plugs per is the way ford made it, dual plugs has been around for yrs, it boosts horsepower, one of the first things I did was the plug wires, didn't help, no fire coming from the coil, always on the same two plugs, but like i said sometimes it would pick up and run like a champ,

So if I'm following you correctly, you have replaced wires and coils (and plugs?) for the same cylinder that keeps dropping?

ignition mod. grounds, pcm or timing belt could all be it but, I would have to look at timing first.

SOURCE: engine code p0307 cylinder #7 misfire

It could be carbon deposits on valve seats keeping valves from totally closing. You can try getting you a can of motorcraft PM3 top end engine cleaner and get engine up to operating temp then remove one of the small vacuum lines from the intake and draw the contents of the can slowly into the engine. After you have drawn in the contents shut engine off and let it soak for about 45 minutes then crank it back up and let it run until it clears. Now it will smoke like a forrest fire while you are doing this so don't be alarmed, just tell the neighbors you are spraying for mosqitos. This may cure the problem. If not you may be looking at a valve job.
This can be verified with a compression test if this is what is causing it.

SOURCE: rough running, erratic spark

Run a compression test on the cylinders. If reading is low on any drop a little engine oil into the pot. If compression rises you have compession ring problems. Remove all plugs before you try this and place leads away from engine.

Change spark plugs on 2.3L ford ranger (drivers side)

some vehicles are very hard to reach the spark plugs, but there has to be a way to reach them, usually from only one direction & angle.
they can get with a universal joint & the right length extension.

TWO DAYS AGO 94 RANGER (4 CYL) SOHC...STOPPED ON ROAD. CRANKS BUT DOES NOT START. HAS FUEL PRESSURE. CHANGED FUEL FILTER. CHANGED AIR FILTER. CHANGED ONE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR COILS...TWO SPARK WIRES WERE NOT...

If all the coils are giving spark now, then you moat likely have gas fouled plugs now,so change them out with new ones, all 8 of them.If you do not have spark on all plug wires, pull the timing belt cover, and align the cam shaft and the cam,to see if the belt has jumped. If It hasn`t,replace the crankshaft sensor.

try to replace the coil and all the spark plugs also make sure that the plugs are gapped right. that info will be on the evaporation sticker onthe core support in the front of the truck under hood. I think it is 0.004 not 100% sure on that. I hope that helps
