If you remove the thermostat the engine will not get hot enough to operate properly , what is the reason for wanting the coolant pressure to be lower ?

You have trapped air in the cooling circuit. Or your water pump may not be operational. Or you have blockage somewhere else in the cooling circuit. By the way...... Did you check and or replace the cooling system cap. You should test that cap once a year.
Some of these cooling systems can be tricky. They place BLEEDER VALVES at the high points in the cooling system. Allowing you to remove all the trapped air out of the closed loop cooling system. The cooling system has to have a certain amount of pressure for purposes of flow. That pressure should be less than the value stated on the cooling cap. Look for bleeder valves, - you will have to fill the vehicle with them open. And then Fill and bleed as the engine is running. When the engine is running you will crack the bleeder open until fluid comes out close it and repeat several times until all the air is removed from the system.
The fact that the system is building up pressure is not an indication that the pump is working. ( think steam engine) when the fluid approaches boiling temp the pressure increases. Please do not use just water to fill your system.
(A) It lowers the boiling temperature of the fluid and
(B) Promotes corrosion (oxidation) in the block and cooling circuit.

I have no pressure in my radiator when the car is hot and running what is causing my problem


check oil make sure it dosent look like milk if it dose you have a blown head gasket if not it could be abad cap not holding pressure a leak, or a bad water pump good luck year and make model would help try scott on you tube.

Where is the thermstat at in a 1998 ford taurus?


I'm guessing you can't find it because it's in a separate housing or located under the lower battery tray in the housing (depending on model of engine). Even though this is specific for 1998; I believe it's the same for 1996-1999 Taurus's. I have access to illustrations, but only .gif and/or .bmp extensions were available which would not copy here. If you need these, I will try an extension change to .jpg. Good luck, this should be enough info. It is helpful to include the engine size in question, for future reference...

3.0L (2V) Engine

Removal

Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat (8575) as described.
2.Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260) from the water hose connection (8592) .
3.Remove the three water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water hose connection .
4.Remove the gasket and water thermostat from the water hose connection . Do not reuse gasket.
Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , gasket and water hose connection as illustrated.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 10-14 Nm (89-124 lb-in).
3.Connect the upper radiator hose to the water hose connection .
4.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water, as described under Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding procedure.
5.Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.
6.Stop the engine. Top off degas bottle as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

Removal

Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat ; refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
2.Raise vehicle on hoist.
3.Disconnect the lower radiator hose (8286) from the water inlet connection.
4.Remove the two water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection.
5.Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water thermostat housing. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
6.If required, remove water thermostat housing retaining bolts, water thermostat housing and O-ring from lower radiator hose tube. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , O-ring, water thermostat housing (if removed) as shown.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
3.Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection.
4.Lower vehicle.
5.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.

Removal
Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat ; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
2.Remove battery.
3.Remove power distribution box.
4.Remove battery tray.
5.Disconnect upper radiator hose and position out of the way.
6.Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet connection (8K528) .
7.Remove the two retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection .
8.Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water pump (8501) . Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

Thermostat

Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , O-rings and water inlet connection as illustrated.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
3.Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection .
4.Install upper radiator hose . Position spring clamp securely.
5.Install battery tray.
6.Install power distribution box.
7.Install battery.
8.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
9.Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.
10.Stop the engine. Top off degas bottle as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

Having trouble bleeding cooling system on 2006 Range Rover. No heat and fan is blowing


The easy way need to be done:
-Make sure the is not presure in the cooling system before do thisor release carefully.
-Disconnect the upper hose from the radiator and fill water (coolant)
through the hose to the engine. If water can't get in beacuse the thermostat is closed. Simply remove it and fill untill full.

Antifreeze is not circlating


either your thermostat is stuck in the closed position, or your water pump needs to be replaced.

How do you replace a thermostat


WARNING: SCALDING HOT COOLANT, WATER OR STEAM
NEVER remove the pressure relief cap under any conditions while the engine is operating. Failure to follow these instruction could result in DAMAGE to the
cooling system or engine AND/OR personal injury. To avoid having scalding hot coolant or steam blow out of the cooling system or reservoir, use extreme care when removing the pressure relief cap from a hot cooling system or reservoir.
  1. Wait until the engine has cooled.
  2. Wrap a thick cloth around the pressure relief cap and turn it slowly (until the pressure begins to release.
  3. Step back while the pressure is released from the cooling system.
  4. When you are certain all the pressure has been released, (still with a cloth) turn and remove pressure relief cap .
REMOVAL

  1. Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat (8575).
  2. Raise vehicle on hoist. See General Information.
  3. Disconnect the lower radiator hose (8286) and degas bottle hose from the water inlet connection.
  4. Remove the two water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection.
  5. Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water thermostat housing. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
  6. If required, remove water bypass hose from water thermostat housing and remove water thermostat housing retaining bolts, water thermostat housing and O-ring from oil filter adapter (6881). Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
INSTALLATION
  1. Install the water thermostat, O-rings, water thermostat housing (if removed) and water inlet connection as illustrated.
  2. Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
  3. If removed, connect the water bypass hose to the water thermostat housing.
  4. Connect the lower radiator hose and degas bottle hose to the water inlet connection.
  5. Lower vehicle.
  6. Fill the coolant with Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or-B (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-8-B) or equivalent that meets Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A in a 50/50 mixture with water.
  7. Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.
  8. Stop the engine. Top off degas bottle as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

My van is over heating and i think my thermostat is bad.i need a location for were it is on the engine


The thermostat is located in the thermostat housing, which is mounted to the coolant crossover tube. The bypass hose is connected to the thermostat water inlet on one end, and to the intake manifold water outlet on the other. The thermostat is not located in the intake manifold water outlet, where the upper radiator hose is connected.

  1. Drain the radiator and recycle the engine coolant.
  2. Remove the upper radiator hose bracket bolt and remove the bracket.
  3. On 1993-98 3.0L engine models:
    1. Remove the bolt from the A/C high pressure line bracket at the front of the engine.
    2. Remove the two A/C accumulator/drier bracket bolts.
    3. Position the accumulator/drier and A/C line out of the way.

  4. Remove the bypass hose clamp and remove the hose from the water inlet.
  5. Remove the four water inlet bolts and remove the inlet.
  6. Remove the thermostat from the inlet.

To install:
  1. Clean and dry the water inlet and thermostat housing mating surfaces.
  2. Apply a continuous bead of RTV silicone sealant 0.08-0.12 inch (2.0-3.0mm) wide to the water inlet mating surface.



NOTE The water inlet must be installed within 5 minutes of applying the sealant.

  1. Install the thermostat in the water inlet, with the jiggle valve at the topmost (12 o'clock) position.
  2. Install the water inlet to the thermostat housing. Install the bolts and tighten them to 12-15 ft. lbs. (16-21 Nm).
  3. Install the bypass hose to the water inlet, using a new clamp.
  4. On 1993-98 3.0L engine models:
    1. Install the accumulator/drier and tighten the bracket bolts to 45 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    2. Install the A/C high pressure line bracket and tighten the bolt to 45 inch lbs. (5 Nm).
    3. Install the upper radiator hose bracket and tighten the bolt to 34-48 ft. lbs. (46-65 Nm).




NOTE Allow the sealant to dry for at least 30 minutes before adding coolant.

  1. Fill the cooling system. Run the engine and check for leaks.

Car is still overheating after new thermostat, new housing.....


bleed air out cooling system. put half antifreeze and half water .if you got too much water .it willl cause engine to over heat. antifreeze raise boiling point .220 degrees it wont boil away . water will evaporate 212 degrees.it will boil away .causing low coolant problems and over heating.

If you have the coil spring suspension, then your spring for that corner has really sagged[doubtful] I suspect you actually have the rear air suspension ,and the air spring for the Right/Rear has lost air, allowing the rear end to lower down greatly. Usually, you need a new air spring when one develops a leak. You may or may not be able to see the leak with a spray solution of soapy water after the spring is removed for inspection. Sometimes you have to apply about 20psi of air pressure into the spring to inflate it a bit, then put the spring under water in a big enough tank/tub of water to catch the leak that way.
