Something may be wrong with your cluster gear since fourth is driven right through the shaft. Does reverse work? Is the clutch completely engaging?

SOURCE: 2002 Kia sportage 5 speed manual 1st, 2nd, 3rd

Oh, forgot to mention, with the rear trans-axle, just for information purposes, there is a video on youtube that you can replace the differential gears with better gears, can't remember if it was from a jeep or what have you but if you do a youtube search on your kia's differential you will find it. Just something to consider as the Kia can be problematic in this area as well, and since I am referring to an 02 model which is very old now and with many problems you will find lots of them in your local scrap-yards. I also suggest for services and parts from local and small scrapyards and many more. Try finding the free stuff first maybe.

SOURCE: 1992 s10 5 speed transmission which 4th gear only works

4th gear in a box is straight through from clutch to tail shaft. All other gears get the movement from the cluster shaft so if you have this problem I would be checking the oil for metal as there may be bearing failure on the shafts.

SOURCE: sudden noise, whining in 1st gear, reverse jerky

Sounds like your final drive pin in your differential broke causing the main spider pin to tear through the case.Catastropic damage.Check for severe fluid leak under car.If no signs of leaks, check dipstick for greyish blk colored fluid. If this is the case you will need to replace transaxle & flush trans cooler.hope this helps

I'm hearing a grinding noise when shifting gears in my 97 nissan pathfinder. It's not a full blown grind but just a slight grinding noise. It does it in reverse 1st 2nd 3rd and just started doin it in 4th....

check and/or change the transmission oil. Clutch problems are noticeable in 1st and reverse but as all the rest are syncro controlled you really do not need to use the clutch to change them. just get the engine rpms to match road speed and they will slip in. I am thinking a oil viscosity problem because of the colder weather.

N16 manual makes a whiring noise when slowing down from 60kph in 4th, stops when put into nuetral

sounds like a bearing is on the way out in the gearbox, nothing really to worry about yet, if it is still going into gear, and not making a grinding noise.

mine makes a whirring noise when accelerating through 1-3rd gears.

It's when there is grinding and growling in the gear box that you need to worry.

Grinding clutch

I'm a little confused on your description of the noise. If I understand you correctly It is making the noise when it shifts smoothly into gear but at the same time it makes a grinding noise ? It possibly can be synchronizers if the grooves on the inside of the synchronizers are worn bad enough to where the gear isn't slowing down enough causing a grind as the clutching teeth on the gear mesh with the synchrode and the shift collar.
If it is making noise in all gears except 4th you may have countershaft brgs failing. The power flow in 4th gear goes directly through the mainshaft and has a 1 to 1 ratio. All other gears the powerflow goes through the countershaft causing a load on the countershaft so if you have bearings failing in the countershaft you will hear noise in all gears but 4th.
i hope I understood you correctly .

2002 Kia sportage 5 speed manual 1st, 2nd, 3rd gear make horrific grinding noise 4th & 5th are fine, any ideas?

ur sikcro rings are badly worn the only way is to repair gear box,or get replacement box, if ur good u could change gear by double de clutching , if u are saying that gears are noisey after changing then u need a new gear box as new gears are very exspencive

Sounds like you have a defectine cluthch componant. Best way to verify is get the rear axle off the ground . So as not to let the rear drive wheels make contact with the ground. Have an assistant start the truck and put it in gear. After making sure the vehicle is secure crawl under the vehicle and listen to comfirm that the noise is coming from the clutch area.

Grinding gears while shifting gears

4th gear started grinding when I shifted up or down and then 3rd started to do the same unless I shifted very carefully. You have 2 choices. 1 - rebuild it since you'll have to take apart to find the problem. 2. try changing the gear oil and make sure its the right synthetic grade, very expensive. This solution is working so far for me. BTW you must change the gear oil in the manual trans every 40k

Won't go into gear to drive. may be transmission?

If the clutch has never been changed most likely it is that. The way you can check it is by removing the transmission and looking at the clutch disc. It could be transmission syncros but I am willing to bet you just need a new clutch.
