You must check you have the correct level.and the correct fluid.as there is a lot of fluid in your torque converter.you must go into each gear.and with the engine on tick over. but you must keep checking the level.or you will burn the brake bands in the gearbox.

I'm assuming automatic transmission. Check your fluid level immediately. If low(hopefully the issue) add required fluid, start vehicle and idle a minute to pump fluid back through system and try putting in gear again. If this solves the issue then you most likely have a leak some where. If fluid level is ok, you will need to see a transmission specialist.

When i start my car and go to put it in gear it wont move.

When you say rocky spot, what do you mean? If you mean there were rocks in the roadway, you could have put a small hole in the transmission pan which leaked all the fluid out of it. First thing I would do is check the fluid level on the transmission dipstick and look for leaks on the ground under the car.

My first question is - have you had the trans filled with fluid ?
If the fluid level is now normal, and you can't shift the gears, you may have damaged the main shaft inside the trans.

98 Dodge Durango goes into gear but wont move?

How much transmission fluid did you put back in. If you didn't put enough it might not get the pressure it needs to change gears. If you put too much then it creates bubbles and foams and it will cause big problems as well. The 42/44RE transmission takes 12 pints (6 quarts) if the transmission was completely overhauled, torque converter was replaced or drained, and cooler was flushed. The 46RE takes the same amount. When adding transmission fluid you only bring it to the minimum level. After that you drive around and let it get warmed up for a while then when you check it, it should be at the max level.

check transmission fluid level could be low.if transmission fluid level okay and fluid and filter been changed every 21000 miles.code scan for transmission fault codes like faulty transmission range sensor.faulty transmission fluid pressure solenoid, look for faulty torque converter code or faulty tcm. if you see no fault codes.either transmission manual shift linkage loose or broken or you have internal transmission damaged.

1989? When was the last time the Transmission was drained and new Transmission Fluid (oil) put in?
This Fluid (oil) loses viscosity and get particles in it causing additional loss in viscosity. I would go to even having the transmission drained and FLUSHED (cleaned) and new Fluid (oil) put in. Recheck the operation.
Boyles and Charles Laws are applicable here: (P*V)/T. Heat causes the Fluid to Heat and Expand (in molecules) but because of the limited sealed volume (transmission case) this increases Pressure allowing the smoother shifting and placement into gears.
Change the Transmission Fluid (oil) and have the Transmission Flushed (cleaning the insides) and your problem should go away.

possibly 2 solutions 1. manual transmission --probably clutch fluid. find out where it is, fill it , and make sure the cap is closed exactly like you took it off. if it's not closed clompletely, pressure won't be able to build up. 2. auto trans-- transmission fluid..note there is no dipstick to check fluid.
