Question about 1997 Pontiac Grand Am
No rod on shifter it is electric.Just kept trying to shift. parked on level
You should get your hands on a Chilton/Haynes repair manual that covers your year/make/model. There is a trouble shooting section that will answer this question and tell/show you how to fix it. It sounds as though either a sensor or switch has failed.

Check all fuses and make sur eyou don't have a blown fuse, first if they are all good then there is a switch on the top of the brake paedal that releases the lock on the shift (Its a safety so that if a kid is in the car with out pressing on brake they could engage the shift to drive) THat switch may be bad. Godd Luck

SOURCE: can't shift out of park
the switch under the shifter is sticking.something might have got spilled.if you can get cover off and take some parts cleaner spray and spray around the switch this should loosen the switch up this happens more frequently than you might think good luck!

SOURCE: 97 grand prix wont shift
Check first if all of your brake lights are working.
The issue could be mechanical in nature. The locks on the shifter may not be releasing the lever. You will have to inspect it by removing the center console and getting into it. Inspect the linkages and you may want to move it yourself to see if there are loose connections. The shift interlock actuator is also found in the same area. This is the one that releases the shifter. IT may have gone bad.
There is one item that may be the possible source of the issue, which is found under the dash at the brake pedal. The solenoid may have gone bad.

Do the brake light work? No brake lights and it won't shift out of park. Check your fuses and check for loose wires. Check your brake light switch. If that has failed, you won't be able to get out of park. The other one if the shift lock solenoid which is in the shifter assembly. The brake shift interlock switch prevents the car being shifted from park unless the brake pedal is depressed. Try to apply power/ground to the proper wires & see if it will activate.. If it does, then the problem is between the brake light switch & that solenoid. Could be the wires or the switch.Make sure the shifter cable is still held down in place at the shifter assembly & under the hood. It is the interlock switch that you hear/feel clicking. It is for the prior generation but may still apply.
Good Luck and hopefully you soon will be on the road again...;-)
