I dont what type of vehicle your talking about,but any brake pad with 3/16 left on it means its time to change them,there is not much life left in them

Brake shoe thickness is measured in millimeters or inches, with the majority measured in millimeters. The minimum thickness a brake shoe should have will vary by manufacturer. However, between 2 and 3 millimeters is generally considered the minimum allowed thickness. Brake shoe thickness can be measured by removing the wheel and brake drum, and measuring the thickness of the brake shoe through the rivet holes.

How do i take off the brake drums on a 2003 chevy cavalier


After you remove the tire, the drim should slide off. If it doesn't then try using a rubber mallet and gently tap on the outside edge as you pull on it. Sometimes you also need to tap on the drum in the center part. I have sprayed penetrating lubes like WD-40 or PB Blaster into the seam at the center. You may also have to back off the parking brake cable or even use the adjuster to back off the shoes.

Brake Relining
  • Brake linings that are worn to within 1/32 inch (0.79 mm) of a rivet head or that have been contaminated with brake fluid, grease, or oil must be replaced.

  • Failure to replace worn linings results in a scored drum. When it is necessary to replace brake shoes, they must also be replaced on the wheel on the opposite side of the vehicle. Inspect brake shoes for distortion, cracks, or looseness. If these conditions exist, the shoe must be discarded.
  • Do not let brake fluid, oil, or grease touch the brake lining.
  • If a brake lining kit is used to replace the linings, follow the instructions in the kit and install all the parts provided.
  • The two general methods of attaching the linings to the brake shoes are bonding and riveting.
  • The bonded linings are fastened with a special adhesive to the shoe, clamped in place, then cured in an oven. Instead of using an adhesive, some linings are riveted to the shoe.
  • Riveted linings allow for better heat transfer than bonded linings.
Drum Shoe and Brake Installation
  • Before installing the shoes, be sure to sand or stone the inner edge of the shoe to dress down any slight lining or metal nicks and burrs that could interfere with the sliding upon the support pads.
  • A support (backing) plate must be tight on its mount and not bent. Stone the shoe support pads brightly and dress down any burrs or grooves that could cause the shoes to bind or hang up.
  • Using an approved lubricant, lightly coat the support pads and the threads of servo star wheel adjusters. On rear axle parking brakes, lubricate any point of potential binding in the linkage and the cable. Do not lubricate nonservo brake adjusters other than to free a frozen adjuster with penetrating oil.

  • Reassemble the brakes in the reverse order of disassembly. Make sure all parts are in their proper locations and that both brake shoes are properly positioned in either end of the adjuster.

  • They should be centered on the backing plate. Parking brake links and levers should be in place on the rear brakes.
  • With all of the parts in place, replace the brake drum.

Brakes freeze after crossing creek. house only tenth of mile from crossing. already backed off brake shoes. this only happen of course when temp is below freezing. Well also happen on going out if you do...


Glaze on the rotors or drums will do that with cheap brake pads or shoes. Take brake cleaner and clean all parts first then see what happens. If the same problem takes on again replace the pads or shoes and get the rotors or drums remachined

  1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
  2. Remove brake drum. If brake drum cannot be removed easily, insert a suitable screwdriver through hole in backing plate, then push adjuster lever away from adjuster and back of adjustment tension.
  3. Remove tension spring, using a suitable tool, then remove rear shoe hold-down spring and pin. Remove rear brake shoe and anchor spring, Fig. 7.
    1. On Land Cruiser models, remove front hold-down spring using a suitable tool, then disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake bellcrank, Fig. 7.
    2. On Pickup, 4Runner, 4WD T100 and 4WD Tacoma models, remove front shoe hold-down spring and pin, using a suitable tool, then disconnect No. 1 parking brake cable from No. 3 parking brake bellcrank.
    3. On 2WD T100 models, proceed as follows:
      1. Remove E-ring, then automatic adjusting lever and C-washer, then parking brake lever. Disconnect brake line from wheel cylinder using a suitable container to catch fluid.
      2. Remove wheel cylinder. Remove following parts from wheel cylinder: two boots, two pistons, two pistons cups and spring.
    1. On models except 2WD T100, remove front brake with strut, then disconnect parking brake cable from front shoe. Remove parking brake cable No. 2.
    2. Remove adjusting lever spring, then the adjuster from front shoe.
    Inspection
    1. Measure brake drum inside diameter. Inside diameter should be 11.61 inches,
      1. Measure brake shoe lining thickness, Fig. 3. Minimum thickness should be .04 inch on models except on T100 models and .039 inch on T100 models.
      2. Inspect brake lining and drum for proper contact and replace drum or shoes as necessary.
      3. Inspect wheel cylinder for corrosion or damage.
      4. Inspect backing plate for wear or damage.
      5. Inspect bellcrank components for bending, wear or damage.
      6. Apply a suitable lubricant to backing plate contact areas.
      Installation
      1. On 2WD T100 models, proceed as follows:
        1. Apply lithium soap base glycol grease to piston cups, pistons and boots.
        2. Assemble and install wheel cylinder.
        3. Connect brake line to cylinder.
      1. Apply high temperature grease to following parts:
      1. Apply a suitable lubricant to adjuster bolt threads and end.
      2. Assemble adjuster to lever, then install adjuster lever spring.
      3. On Land Cruiser models, install parking brake lever cable to parking brake shoe, then attach cable to bellcrank.
      4. On Pickup, 4Runner, 4WD T100 and 4WD Tacoma models, install No. 1 parking brake cable to parking brake lever shoe, then attach the other side of cable to No. 3 bellcrank.
      5. Position front shoe in place with end of shoe inserted into piston, then install shoe hold-down spring and pin using a suitable tool.
      6. Assemble anchor spring to front and rear shoe, then install rear shoe with end inserted in piston.
      7. Install rear shoe hold-down spring and pin, then the tension spring.
      8. If necessary, adjust bellcrank as follows:
        1. Lightly pull bellcrank in direction "A", Fig. 8, until there is no slack in part "B".
            1. Rotate adjusting bolt until dimension "C" is .016-.031 inch.
            2. Lock adjusting bolt with locknut, when connect parking brake cable to bellcrank.
            3. Install tension spring.
          1. Ensure proper parking brake travel.
          2. Pull adjusting lever cable upward, then release and ensure adjusting bolt rotates. If bolt does not rotate, check for improper installation of rear brakes.
          3. Adjust strut to shortest possible length, then install drum.
          4. Pull parking brake lever fully upward. Repeat process several times.
            1. Remove drum, then check for proper clearance, Fig. 4. Clearance should be .024 inch. If clearance is not as specified, check parking brake system.
            2. Install brake drum, then bleed and refill brake system.
            3. Install wheel and tire assembly, then lower vehicle.

FRONT ROTORS & PADS
  1. Remove caliper.
  2. Remove cap and snap ring, Fig. 10, then remove cone washers with tapered punch.
  3. Insert suitable length bolts into flange bolt holes, then tighten bolts evenly and remove flanges.
  4. Remove free wheel hub cover and snap ring, then remove nut, spring washer and cone washer with suitable tapered punch.
  5. Remove free wheel hub body and gasket.
  6. Remove locknut, lock washer and adjusting nut.
  7. Remove axle hub and brake disc as an assembly.
  8. Remove oil seal and inner bearing from hub.
  9. Reverse procedure to install. Torque adjusting nut to 43 ft. lbs., then back off nut. Torque nut to 18 ft. lbs. Using spring scale attached to hub bolt, check that preload is 1.4-12.6. Install lockwasher and locknut, if equipped. Torque locknut to 35 ft. lbs., and recheck preload. Secure lockwasher by bending one tab inward and one tab outward.
  1. Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
  2. Remove clip and hole pins, Fig. 9.
  3. Remove anti-rattle spring and shim(s) if equipped, then remove brake pads.
  4. Lubricate caliper housing with suitable brake grease at pad contact points.
  5. Reverse procedure to install.

How to install rear brakeshoes


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
If you are not thoroughly familiar with the procedures involved in brake replacement, only disassemble and assemble one side at a time, leaving the other wheel intact as a reference.
1983-88 Vehicles
See Figures 1, 2 and 3
  1. Raise and safely support the rear of the vehicle with jackstands.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  3. Remove the brake drum, as outlined earlier in this section.
  4. Place Brake Cylinder Clamp D81L-1103-B or equivalent, over the ends of the brake cylinder.
CAUTIONBe careful that the springs do not slip off the tool during removal, as they could cause personal injury.
  1. Remove the shoe-to-anchor springs, using Brake Shoe R and R Spring BT-11, or equivalent, then unhook the cable eye from the anchor pin.

  1. Remove the shoe guide (anchor pin) plate.
  2. Remove the shoe hold-down springs, shoes, adjusting screws, pivot nut, socket and automatic adjustment parts.
  3. Remove the parking brake link, spring and retainer. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  4. After removing the secondary brake shoe, disassembly the parking brake lever from the shoe by removing the retaining clip and spring washer.

  1. The brake cable must be connected to the secondary brake shoe before the shoe is installed on the backing plate. To do this, first transfer the parking brake lever from the old secondary shoe to the new one. This is accomplished by spreading the bottom of the horseshoe clip and disengaging the lever. Position the lever on the new secondary shoe and install the spring washer and the horseshoe clip. Close the bottom of the clip after installing it. Grasp the metal tip of the parking brake cable with a pair of pliers. Position a pair of side cutter pliers on the end of the cable coil spring, and using the plier as a fulcrum, pull the coil spring back with the side cutters. Position the cable in the parking brake lever.
  2. Apply a light coating of high temperature grease to the brake shoe contact points on the backing plate. Position the primary brake shoe on the front of the backing plate and install the hold-down spring and washer over the mounting pin. Install the secondary shoe on the rear of the backing plate.
  3. Install the parking brake link between the notch in the primary brake shoe and the notch in the parking brake lever.
  4. Install the automatic adjuster cable loop end on the anchor pin. Make sure the crimped side of the loop faces the backing plate.
  5. Install the return spring in the primary brake shoe and, using the tapered end of the brake spring service tool, slide the top of the spring onto the anchor pin.
CAUTIONBe careful to make sure that the spring does not slip off the tool during installation, as it could cause injury.
  1. Install the automatic adjuster cable guide in the secondary brake shoe, making sure the flared hole in the cable guide is inside the hole in the brake shoe. Fit the cable into the groove in the top of the cable guide.
  2. Install the secondary shoe return spring through the hole in the cable guide and the brake shoe. Using the brake spring tool, slide the top of the spring onto the anchor pin.
  3. Clean the threads on the adjusting screw and apply a light coating of high temperature grease to the threads. Screw the adjuster closed, then open it 1/2 turn.
  4. Install the adjusting screw between the brake shoes with the star wheel nearest to the secondary shoe. Make sure the star wheel is in a position that is accessible from the adjusting slot in the backing plate.
  5. Install the short hooked end of the automatic adjuster spring in the proper hole in the primary brake shoe.
  6. Connect the hooked end of the automatic adjuster cable and the free end of the automatic adjuster spring in the slot in the top of the automatic adjuster lever.
  7. Pull the automatic adjuster lever (the lever will pull the cable and spring with it) downward and to the left and engage the pivot hook of the lever in the hole in the secondary brake shoe.
  8. Check the entire brake assembly to make sure that everything is installed properly. Make sure that the shoes engage the wheel cylinder properly and are flush on the anchor pin. Make sure that the automatic adjuster cable is flush on the anchor pin and in the slot on the back of the cable guide. Make sure that the adjusting lever rests on the adjusting screw star wheel. Pull upward on the adjusting cable until the adjusting lever is free of the star wheel, then release the cable. The adjusting lever should snap back into place on the adjusting screw star wheel and turn the wheel one tooth.
  9. Expand the brake adjusting screw until the brake drum will just fit over the brake shoes.
  10. Install the brake drum and wheel and tire assembly, then adjust the brakes.
  11. Carefully lower the vehicle.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

  1. Install the parking brake lever (2).
  2. Install the spring washer (3). The concave side of the spring washer should face the parking brake lever.
  3. Install the pin (4).
  4. Install the retaining ring (16).
  5. Install the adjuster pin (12) in the shoe (15) so the pin projects 6.8 to 7.0 mm (0.268 to 0.276 inch) from the side of the shoe web where the adjuster actuator is installed.
  6. Apply brake lubricant or equivalent to the threads of the adjuster screw (14) and inside diameter and face of the socket (7). Adequate lubrication is achieved when there is a continuous bead of lubricant at the open end of the adjuster nut (10) and the socket (7) when the threads are fully engaged.
  7. Install the upper return spring (5).
    • Lay the shoes (1 and 15) on a clean, flat work surface in the position they will be in when installed on the backing plate.
    • The shoe with the parking brake lever goes to the rear of the vehicle.
NOTICE: Do not over-stretch the upper return spring. Damage can occur if it is stretched to more than 204.2 mm (8.04 inches) .

  1. Install the adjusting screw assembly.
  1. Lubricate the shoe pads on the backing plate with a thin coat of white lithium grease.
  2. Install the shoe and lining assemblies (1 and 15).
  3. Install the upper return spring (5).
  4. Install the adjusting screw assembly.
    • Do not damage the wheel cylinder boots.
    • Overlap the bottoms of the shoes so the upper shoe ends clear the wheel cylinder boots.
    • Make sure the upper shoe ends rest on the wheel cylinder piston ends.
    • Do not place the lower shoe web ends under the anchor plate until the lower return spring is installed.
NOTICE: Do not over-stretch the lower return spring. Damage can occur if it is stretched to more than 107.3 mm (4.22 inches) .

  1. Install the lower return spring (6).
    • Bring the ends of the shoe and lining assemblies (1 and 15) together over the anchor plate.
    • Hook the spring ends to the shoe web holes.
    • Spread the lower ends of the shoe and the lining assemblies to clear the anchor plate.
    • Position the shoes against the backing plate and release them.
    • Pull the spring into the groove at the bottom of the anchor plate.
  1. Connect the hold-down pins and the spring assemblies (8).
  2. Install the adjuster actuator (11) over the end of the adjuster pin (12) so the top leg engages the notch in the adjuster screw. NOTICE: Do not over-stretch the actuator spring. Damage can occur if it is stretched to more than 83 mm (3.27 inches) .
  3. Install the actuator spring (13). The free end of the adjuster actuator (11) must engage the notch of the adjuster nut.
  4. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever (2).
  5. Install the drum. Align the marks made during disassembly.
  6. Adjust the rear brakes.
  7. Install the tire and the wheel. Align the marks made during disassembly.

REAR BRAKES


i think your aware of how to change the brakes if im right and your problem is the rusted drum doesnt want to come off the only way to get the old drum off is to remove adjuster plug from behind drum dustshield and adjust the shoes so that there not even close to the braking area of the drum then try and wiggle the drum off of the assembly if it is not coming off then you need to use the old nylon hammer on the drum and i mean you must hit the drum from side to side trying by hand to wiggle the drum off its a tight fit and you need to strike the drum on the face not on the fins not wanting to damage with persistance and care and patience you will eventually be able to remove the drum to service brakes take care and good luck with it
