There is a special tool used to disconnect the lines from the fuel filter. You should be able to get them at any local automotive shop, i.e., Pepboys, Autozone, Chief Auto. It should be relatively cheap to buy this tool.

Yes, but there is still a lot of stuff to move out of the way to get in there and pull them. I would try all the chemical remedies for sticky lash adjusters (oil flush, marvel's mystery oil, etc.) first, then check the timing belt to see if a worn timing belt has let it slip a tooth and the valve timing is off for that reason before digging into the lifters. There used to be a forum that had video and audio from a subaru legacy this model before and after swapping out a bad lifter. Google for it and see if the noise matches.

there is a belt tensioner pullery that is a small pulley not connected to any type of engine part but is on the serpentine belt system, you have to tighten this pulley with a socket until the belt doesnt squeal

Yes, you've overtightened the lifters causing the valves to not close completely. If you did not prime the new lifters before you installed them and tightened them with the engine off they are most likely collapsed. back off all of the rockers to just snug and make sure the engine is running when you readjust them. Usually you need to let new lifters sit in a can of oil for a while to fill up. I've used a syringe to fill lifters prior to installation. Did you replace the push-rods also? If so were they the same length as the originals?

You don't. That engine came from the factory with hydraulic roller lifters. Hydraulic lifters require no adjustment.

I would put a oil pressure gage on the truck and verify that the pump is good. The lifters should not rattle unless someone has been adjusting the valve lash. At 196000 miles the lifters maybe getting weak, push rods could be wearing.

You can't do this, the system is set up for hydraulic as far as the fuel injection control modules programming goes, also how would you adjust them, there is no provision for that on the engine you have.

What is the recomended torque setting for rocker arm nuts on a 289 ford mustang 1966

If all parts on this motor are stock and it is not a high performance engine but a stock windsor unit, there is no actual torque standard for the rocker arm nuts since the lifters are hydraulic. The manual procedure recommends the following:
with the motor off, tighten all rocker nuts until there is no slack between the rocker arm and the tip of the valve stem. Make sure each rocker is on the heel of the cam, this proceedure can be done one cylinder at a time or you can follow the ford V-8 cylinder identification for valve clearence sequence. I like the one cylinder at a time, it's a little slower but I think it's more accurate. after all rockers are set to the above mentioned clearance, start the motor and let the oil pressure build up in the lifters. At this point you should have installed the oil deflector clips on the rockers, just above the oil squirt holes, otherwise, things get a little messy. when the oil pressure is up, tighten down on each rocker until the engine starts to miss. At this point back off enough to clear the engine idle up and move on to the next rocker. Hope this helps.

this car uses hydraulic lifters. If your lifter is tapping, make sure the nut is tight on the rocker arm. If it still taps, the lifter has failed and must be replaced.

Loud ticking coming from upper engine,f150 5.6l running good!

first off it's a 5.4 liter not a 5.6liter....and that loud ticking you hear with it runnin fine is the hydraulic lifters...huge tsb on them puppies....try aheavier oil and if no correction then you will have to have an updated lifter install

Removed a 14 bolt aod tranny from a 85 couger efi put it in my 63 ford truck which is carburated now it wont shift my 63 has a 5.0 302 same as the couger but my truck is carburated an the car was efi does...

No. AOD trans from 1985 is hydraulic shift. You need to hook up the Throttle valve cable from the drivers side of the trans to the carb. Is this hooked up.

i would suspect that your lifters are weak therefore the noise .or the rocker arms need adjustment i would try adjusting them to specs and see if that solves it, if not either the lifters are weak and need replaced or your cam lobes are worn. if you have to replace the lifters you must replace the cam as well . please rate this thanks
