There are no such things as free inspections, However, sounds like the EGR valve might be stuck in the open position. disconnect the wire plug to the EGR if there are no change to the way the car sounds replace the EGR.

I am not sure what fumes you are talking about, but if they are exhaust fumes you smell there is probably an exhaust pipe leak, joint leak, or manifold leak. Take it to a reputable exhaust shop or garage for free inspection.

You have a gas leak in the engine compartment and your fresh air intake is picking up the fumes and blowing them into the cabin. Get this checked out by a pro ASAP

I smell exhaust fumes in the cabin. What could be causing this?

The most common cause is an exhaust leak in the engine compartment near the engine. The exhaust fumes are pulled into the passenger compartment thru the heater vents. Switching to Rec might cut off the intake of air from outside.

A very small amount of oil weeping onto something hot, manifold, turbo etc can give off considerable smell with little smoke. What's the miles?
When was the last service?
What condition is the engine?
Worn engine can give pressure in engine forcing oil fumes/vapour out of breathers onto hot surfaces which then enter car ventilation system.

Gas smell and burning smell from honda 1997

Could be two different problems.
If the check engine light is not on, I would look at the vapor canister for the gas tank. Its usually mounted in the engine compartment.
If you have a small oil leak, the fumes will be sucked into the passenger compartment thru the cowl vents.
